    Hello,

I have a Koenig Iron Works winch I’m trying to identify. The upper part of the worm drive housing is aluminum, the lower half and A frame on the other end is cast iron. Casting numbers 4524 and 543 A

I’m trying to figure out what it’s rated for, seems like all the Jeep models I see are all aluminum. I suspect t may still not be heavy enough for my purposes, so I may be selling it.

    Thanks!

(I sent an email to Herm as well)

I think most were rated about 4000# on Jeep apllications. But those PTO units were very powerful winches, probably could pull a lot more than that.

I thought I saw they were rated for 8. For what I'm doing (Big Dodge) I'd want twice that.

I accidently drove off with my Koenig winch still engaged. When the hook refused to go through the fairlead it parted 3/8" cable. Don't know what that rating is, but it's a lot more than 8k lbs.

Yeh, I was almost thinking maybe it was 4-ton, not 4 thousand pound... But my M-715 winch was rated 8000# and was a heck of lot bigger.

But those are "real" pounds, not the magical ones newer electric winches are 'rated' for.

I checked both of my Koenigs, I have a low mount and a high mount, the housings on both are Al. I think both are rated at 8,000 lbs. and can easily snap a cable or stretch a frame.

Back in the day when that number actually was from an equation, not a sales pitch.

I have 2 late 40s/early 50s Delta table saws with "1hp" motors the size of small suitcases that outperform my new 5hp delta shaper that blows capacitors every time you push it hard. Old junk rules!

As a member you are certainly welcome to post direct onto the CJ-3B Bulletin Board.
Or just what specific Koenig winch info you searching for ?

Can you post a pic of the winch in question ?

I'm trying to determine which model is it and how much it might be rated for, being as it is mostly cast iron or steel instead of all aluminum like all the ones I find online. I'll get a pic, but it looks like the ones you see everywhere, just not aluminum.

If you can get ahold of our member, Windyhill, I think he knows his stuff about winches. It sounds like you have an early version.
The 2A and 3B sites also have a lot of info.

Aluminum top housing casting number A524. Stamped number 54557

Cast-iron drive gear housing casting number 543A

Shaft is one and three-quarter diameter by 26 inches long

Drum 4 inch diameter by 14 inches wide inside. 10" outside diameter.

It would be interesting and helpful if someone could compare my dimensions to one they have to get an idea how much more beefy it might be.

Hydraulic drive appears aftermarket. I have a belt driven PTO I might try to use to run it.

    Thanks!

If you click on the pic, it will take you to photobucket, and then click the magnifying glass, and you can see the pics very large.
