My '57 CJ5 F-head has a broken exhaust manifold stud at the rear-most location, and direct acess to drill/tap etc. is obstructed by the bump-out of the leftside firewall.

Anyone know any cool tricks, or will I need to pull the engine someday?

I pulled the engine. Didn't want to chance messing something up.

I don't know how to get at it without pulling the engine.....or the body. Unless of course the stud was sticking out some and you could get a pipe wrench on it....then PB blaster, heat, tug, tap or whatever and got lucky and it was to come out.

Man, that's rough. I feel your pain. Is there any sticking out?

No. Broke off at the block.

I've been getting along by using muffler patch where the gasket leaks, lasts a season. Might do that for a few more years.

Pete: MIG weld a nut to what remains of the stud. The heat from the MIG loosens up the stud somewhat. I did it to mine and it worked like a charm. That being said, if the stud broke off at the block, then you will have to take off the manifold to weld the nut on the stud.

That might possibly work, if I pull the manifold. Then I will probably have two more busted studs!

Of course if it doesn't work, then I will be pulling the engine for sure...

I don't have MIG, just AC stick. Think that would do it?

In that awkward position a MIG gun would be more user friendly, but of course stick would work too.

Stick might be even better. The welding on of a nut is just a brilliant idea

It's in a somewhat difficult place to strike an arc is the problem.

there was a trick to this but i cant remember exactly what it was. Something like welding a washer on the broken bolt then a large nut onto the washer. that way you dont have to try and get a good weld inside of a tiny nut
