Original Rear View Mirror On 58

So in comparing your picture to my windshield, where you have a bolt holding the mirror bracket, I have the end of the bolt coming through from the outside which is holding the hood lock bracket for when the hood is raised. Both of those bolts go from the outside to the in and there is not enough thread left to attach that mirror bracket, let alone get a nut on. So how is your hood latch attached? Does that mirror bracket bolt show through on the outside?

 

The safety hood latch bolts are separate from the rear view mirror bracket bolts. The rear view mirror does not attach to those bolts.

 

I'll check it out further, when I get back over to the barn again.

Okay.

The left-side bolt goes through the mirror and the hood latch with a nut on the outside.
Right-side bolt (shorter) is threaded into the reinforcement plate from the outside, holding only the latch.

 

So I can see this makes some sense I guess. Seems like the factory would have just ran a little longer bolt from the outside instead of flipping it. That way a mirror could be replaced without affecting the hood latch. But who knows. PeteL yours is a one owner meaning you bought it back in the 50's?

 

Meaning I bought it about 2002 from the lady who bought it new. But I've known both the lady and the Jeep its entire life.

By the way, about what is the width of the mirror? The Willys Jeep Parts is saying its 8 1/2 wide (the pic posted above). I'm guessing your looks like maybe 6.

 

Yeah, about six inches. I think it is the same part as a CJ3B "two hole" type.
Also used on militarys but with tinted glass, I'm told.

 

Sounds pretty definitive to me.

Yeah, except that the bolting specs do not match the reality of my jeep's actual installation.

 

Those mounting specs are spot-on for my '64 Tux windshield frame. That is the mirror my old '59 had, and the Tux had a chrome version, right down to the round head slotted screws.
Now for the big question, Uncle Vin, where did you get that mirror, and are any more available?

That's not my mirror. I had researched this issue extensively years ago. I believe I found the answer on the CJ2A Page. Those mirrors do come up from time-to-time on eBay. A used one is fine. Just bead blast it, paint it or powdercoat it, and have the mirror changed at a glass shop.

No "right" or "wrong," just Jeeps with different histories. Each one has story to tell.
