Here in the Northeast road-salt rustbelt, some people extend their vehicle's life by annually spraying the underside and frame with used engine oil, WD40, chainsaw bar oil, or other concoctions.

Recently I have been using "Penetrol," after a friend recommended it. it is sold as an additive for oil paints, but also functions as a metal preserving coating. It goes on wet, dries to a hard film. Seems to work.

Anyone here have experienced opinion of this product, or solid knowledge of other ideas?

Use it in paint, helps it lay down, brush marks disappear.

Guess I wasn't clear - my question was meant to ask about effective DIY rust-proofing.

I asked the same question a while back. The best suggestion I got was to take a cup or so of old motor oil, mix it with a couple pounds of parafin wax and apply liberally to the underside. I know I got the amounts of oil and wax wrong but you get the idea. warm it up in a water bath and spray with a heavy duty sprayer or schultz gun (spelled it wrong). Reapply as needed.

Good guess. According to the MSDS from the Flood company, Penetrol is a proprietary blend of heat polymerized linseed oil, naphtha solvent, Stoddard solvent and soya long oil alkyd resin.

Why careful - do you mean the likelihood of spontaneous combustion? Very true, I have seen it happen.

Been using it for years. A friends uncle in North Carolina restored Corvairs and other vehicles for years and swore by it. I like to brush it on but you could use a Shutz gun or similar.

I painted my frame with POR-15 and painted the underside of the Tub with a spray on bedliner. Works perfectly, looks even better. :)

They use much road salt when it snows there in Hawaii? ;-)

I've tried POR, but in this case I'm thinking of something that will penetrate crevices, interior spaces, and existing rust scale, etc.

Ha! Good point. I had the Jeep in the northeast before I moved to Hawaii and its moving back in about a year. So far the POR-15 has been great.
