    Thanks.

Heavy rains and flood warnings here in NH, so haven't been able to get back out and under the Jeep yet.

I can't help but wonder if this is the problem, especially when not running. Seems to me it would be like trying to install an axle shaft by just jamming it in and hoping the splines line up without rotating it.

    Me too.

But I've tried while using the clutch to attempt it at all rotation speeds right down to a standstill, and up again, repeatedly. I even tried while cranking with just the starter and the ignition off. I can feel the teeth bumping, but they won't slide in.

I figured you tried that but just thought I'd throw that out there. My other part of the thought was what if the taper is allowing it to "reject" engaging since it doesn't turn easily? I know that seems far fetched. It does suck that you can't just go out and try it because of the weather.

    ALIGNMENT!

    Works now, slicker-n-sn*t.

I backed off the mounting bolts, then I could kinda crunch it in and out, using the clutch and engine.
Let it run in gear for 15 minutes, shifting it often.

Then I torqued the mount bolts while the PTO was in gear and spinning under power.
After re-torquing around the bolt circle repeatedly, then it shifted like a dream, even at a standstill with engine off.

Thank you all for the insights and support!
