So I’ll be using a 6x6 steel column for a jib crane. I’ll need to attach a hinge to it for the arm to swing on.

Question: .the steel column has a welded seam running the entire length on one side. Like HREW pipe I guess, right?

So what side of this square column should I attach the hinge and arm to? The side with the welded seam or it’s opposite side?

I'd think that's right. The seam is either in compression (hinge side) or tension (opposite side) - either way, the forces are parallel to the seam and would not matter.

Ok. I thought the side opposite the weld would be best in order to keep the stress from being directly exerted on the welded side. Again, perhaps I'm overthinking it.
