Quick double check on dana 25 info.

To Confirm, Dana 25's have "front axle" cast into the upper right side of the center section but don't say dana 25 on them any where. All dana 27's have "27" or "27A" cast into the upper right hand side of the center section.


If so I just scored a front dana 25 with a extremely rare factory power-loc and 5:38's
And a matching dana 44 with a power- loc as well. Woo Hoo!

 

My 25 has a "25" stamped on it. Looking at the rear of the diff housing- it is just above the axle on the flat flange portion that slopes back down. Clear as mud? I'll try to get a pic

On both my 55cj and my daughters 53A1 the front axle has a 25 cast into the upper half of the housing on the drivers side ( as viewed from behind drivers side tire ) and both have "front axle" cast into it on the front upper right.

Hello All...
On the 58 CJ5 my son and I are working on, the front axle is a 25 and the rear is a 44. I've heard the front and rear have to match... Is this really the case?? From this thread it sounds as though 25 & 44 are a good match.!?! Please enlighten me.

By match it means the gear ratios have the be the same, or within 1% of each other.

 

So I guess I need to determine the ratios of each axle... the "25" and "44" only indicate the size(?) and model???
I can open them up and determine the ratio... and go from there.
Or correct me if I'm wrong.

Unless they have been changed out they match from the factory. Do they still have the metal tag on the covers telling the tooth count and ratio?

 

The easiest way to determine the ratios is if the metal tags are still under one of the cover bolts. All of these will have the teeth count and some also show the ratio. If that fails, pull the cover and the teeth counts are usually stamped on the ring gear. You can also jack up the axle and count how many times the yoke rotates to get one revolution on the wheels, assuming both are off the ground, but this is less percise and the difference between say 4.10 and 4.27 may not be real obvious. The capacity of the diff models usually increases with the model number, the possible exception being there is little difference in the strength of a 25 versus a 27. As per the above posts, most Dana/Spicer diffs have the model number cast on one of the webs. In my observations, this is more true for the older ones than for the newer ones.

 

Joe, dana 25 and dana 44 are the model of the axles you have, then you have the axle ratio which has to be the same in both axles. Your stock axle ratio was more then likely 5:38 ratio. to determine what you have check the axle tag if it's still there which will have a # like 43/8 or such. divide the large # by the small one you get roughly 5:38 gearing as an example. You can also pull the axle cover and check the ring gear in there. It will have "Dana" and the # stamped on there as well. Have fun.
