I'm not sure I understand the attraction to a hand crank. If starting is for some reason doubtful, just park it heading downhill and bump start it. But the best advice is to make sure everything is up to snuff so you don't have to worry about that. I still have a couple of hand crank crawlers here. The Cat 22 is relatively mild-only tries to break your arm maybe 1:100. The McCormick Deering T20 is about 1:3. No joy.

I went through the PTO versus electric debate back in the 60's and bought a Belleview. It still works fine 50 years later. I have never looked back. There are a LOT more moving parts on a PTO winch, all of which require space to run which in turn limits what you can do when modifying other items. For trail use I just can't justify one.

Personally, I would be looking for a used Warn 8274 and be done with it. All replacement parts are available and they are easy to rebuild. And most important: if you are solo tens of miles from the nearest road, you can depend on it. It's not some place I want cheap chinese.

`I love the idea of a had crank, and having a starter that acts up on my 2A there's been a few cases it would have been great. That being said, I'd rather have the winch. And put one of those cheap start boxes in your tool box. seriously, they are amazing.
Got this one for my son on a whim. we used the crap out of it for almost two years. It even started my dozer a few times.

Hand crank without a spark advance/retard lever is a very bad idea. Go for the winch and don't look back. NEVER hand crank something with the spark advanced.

amazing to see so much happening on a thread i'd forgotten about.

i might be able to get my hands on a PTO winch from @Oldpappy, so that's plan A. if he decides to keep it, i'm just gonna start looking for something that'll do the job.
