I have always wanted a PTO winch but the opportunity and parts just never came my way. I bought a Koenig Model 74 Dana 20 PTO adapter 20 years ago, but that was as far as it went.
I've had a Desert Dynamics 9000 lb electric winch, I used it many years and burned up several batteries,as it got tired it was put on the car hauler. during my 95 to 99 frame off rebuild, I replaced the winch with an 8000lb Mile Marker hydraulic winch. The first time I used it, I got my M416 trailer stuck on the dunes in Glamis. It required 4 full pulls to get it out. The winch worked perfectly, but again several years later it started having issues with the pay in solenoid. I talked to Mile Marker tech support, they said replace the solenoid block,($175) I did and when I went to use the winch the next year same problem. Since it would pay out, I reverse wrapped the drum to get a guy out, but the power steering pump got so hot it boiled the fluid out and destroyed the pump. (which is worse, a fried battery or power steering pump) So I finally started looking for the rest of the parts for a PTO Winch

I found a winch on ebay

and when I opened it up the gears inside looked like new, almost no scoring.

PTO is the way go, IMHO, and as your experience evidences.
    You will love this set-up.

    Make your mounts extra strong.

Well I forgot to take a pic before I started, but here is everything removed and ready to start
    [IMG]
    Here are things lined up
    [IMG]
    Then mounting the winch
    [IMG]

After I got it mounted, it is sitting 3" above the cross member, I am using 1/2 grade 8 bolts going thru 1" sq tubing to bolt it to the cross member, but I think I need to get a piece of 3" square stock to use instead, as PeteL said "Make your mounts extra strong."

Now it's time for the PTO adapter. As I said I found a Koenig Model 74 Dana 20 adapter. It has a shorter arm than the Ramsey. The Ramsey arm puts the drive shaft right next to the frame. which is fine if you pre 72. But the Koenig put the drive shaft far enough off the frame to allow the exhasut to pass by.
Here is the Dana 20 before.

    and after

I think i've laid out the drive shaft path 3 times, but it seems the most direct is the best. I put a carrier bearing on the transmission, one on the front bumper and on over the sway bar.

I had to notch the front bumper because the worm gear housing was resting on it, next I had to notch the front cross member for the shaft to pass.
I had to notch both front and back.

Waiting on parts now, I need an offset link, and nylon washers so the shifter linkage doesn't rattle, and I have to fab the parts for the shift linkage. oh and a chain cover needs made, so much to do. o_O

I though that mount looked awful high. Now I see why.

You definitely need a very beefy mount to resist the torque arm effect.

With the crossmember being notched, and being the mount base, I would hope you reinforced the notched areas to restore it's full strength.

I have bent jeep frames more than once pulling hard with PTO winches. The tension load-path needs to be transfered to the side rails with maximum rigidity.

    Just my .02

Good point, I have been making a backing plate to weld around the notches. And I have been trying to fab something to transfer stress to side rails and front bumper.

I got the linkage made and installed and a bracket made for the shift arm.

And I tested things, I have 4 speeds of pay in, and one reverse. Once I get the rust taken care underneath, the extra bracing and the skid plate back in place I will test things under load

The problem with getting near the end of a project is all the little details that need addressed. I cut a 3" circle out of 1/4" plate, then drilled a 1" hole in that, and used it to reinforce the back side of the cross member. the front will be easy, just a slight dip in a straight piece, and weld it across the bottom.

then I removed the winch, I have another 3/8 thick 3" piece of angle iron that is long enough to span the frame. I'll have to mack a few notches so as to not interfere with the Plow mount, I can then weld it to the angle iron all ready on the back of the winch, add a few gussets and bolt it to the frame as well as the bolts already there for the cross member. I also have some 1 1/2 angle to attach to the gussets and run at a 45 deg angle to the front bumper, that should stop any lateral movement.
    ( I'll get pics as I go)

Didn't get as much done as I wanted, I did get the angle cut and test fit.

And then got the back side welded, (I know.... my welding .....)

Then it got dark, and I scrambled to get everything in the garage before it started raining.
I'll get it mounted tomorrow and get the cross bracing welded then take it all apart and paint it.

The Koenig Model 74 PTO adapter for the Dana20 is leaking around the output shaft. I have tried sending emails to Koenig Winches, I know this is a legacy part but any info would help, but they have not responded. I can not tell if the output bearing is a sealed type or is there a shaft seal in front of it. So unless I can find info I will be removing the adapter and try to disassemble and remove the output shaft components to try to get replacements.

I pulled the adapter and came close to finding the proper seal. the outside dia ia 1.400, but the seal I found is 1.375. But I used JB weld steel and it seems to holding.

I also was looking at the Ramasey website about the H200 winch. It states the line speeds are based on a worm gear speed of 750 rpm.
    1st wrap = 12 FPM
    2nd wrap = 15 FPM
    3rd wrap = 17 FPM
    4th wrap = 20 FPM

So I got my laser PRM meter and checked my drive line speed. 750 shaft RPM is in 4th gear @ 1000 engine rpm.
    Interesting.
