I’m building a rear bumper/tire carrier for my cj5. Gets me out of the house during the quarantine! I started with a 2x4 piece of 3/16 wall steel tube. I got the bumper build parts a while back from A to Z fabrication before their owner sadly passed away. Almost done with the bumper part, just need to finish end caps and some mounting tabs and latch hardware. Still deciding what to coat it with, paint, powder coat, I have extra monstaliner from the tub:shrug:. I haven’t had a great experience with the local powder coat shop. Hitch receiver and tow points are welded front and back as well as the spindle top and bottom. Anyways, here’s some pictures of my progress!

Thanks, D and 4.5 on the receiver/tow points and spindle, C and 4 on the end caps or it was burning through. Making sure it gets full penetration on the end caps so when I grind it smooth it still has good contact.

Looks good. I need to do this too at some point. I prefer paint for bumpers that'll be used off road. They are going to get scratched anyway and it's easier to match the touch up. A quality paint, with a self etching primer is pretty durable.

I really like what your doing. I’m curious to see how you do the latch side, as I’ve also just started on in on building my rear bumper and want to build something along the same lines.

I agree, I painted my front bumper and will probably do the same here.

Thank you! I went with a simple screw in “latch” that came with the bumper build kit, I’ll post pictures when I finish the bumper next week!

What are your plans for mounting it to the frame?

D9FBD309-D0DA-4BA8-9E84-5C008C71392D.jpeg There is mounting points I welded to the bumper that will bolt through the existing rear cross member and I’ll build an L bracket on the inside connecting it to the frame. I also added two tabs to bolt it to the bottom of the crossmember.

Finally got my rear bumper/tire carrier painted and installed! Gotta space it out another 1/4” to clear the tailgate hinges. Also got the rock sliders installed. F2351381-3CC1-493E-BCA6-A252272A71F3.jpeg 69363E40-2FAF-4B6E-BD6A-E2392145AD4A.jpeg 2F6A79A3-FAC3-44E3-B4AA-A60F05A899B1.jpeg

Looks great! Maybe I missed it, did you buy one of the kits for the hinge/tire mount? If so, which one?

Thank you! I bought a bumper build kit from A to Z manufacturing but unfortunately the owner passed away not too long ago. I think Ruffstuff specialties has a similar build kit. Came with the spindle/bearings for hinge, very heavy duty, and hitch receiver, mounts/hardware, tow points, latch, and tire mount. I had to buy the square tubing and weld it all up.

OK cool... I'm always curious to hear what the quality is like on the different spindle/bearing kits... glad to hear that one is good.
