Seats

Trying to make a decision. Do I get original seats done at 300.00 a pc or get new at 99.00 a pc ?? If I go aftermarket I have to go to black which was an option for my yr but I will have them Monday. Reupholstered original which only thing original would be the frame will be 2 to 3 weeks but close to original color ...help

 

300 a seat is average

 

John, if you decide to have your originals reupholstered, let me know. I've collected quite a few photos of original '66-'67 CJ5 seats that I'd be glad to share. I printed the photos out and gave them to the guy reupholstering my seats, and he says they will be very helpful in creating new seat covers to match the originals as closely as possible.

 

Get the originals done, you'll be much happier.

The PO installed bestop seats, they had little padding and a bar at the lower back which was VERY uncomfortable.

 

I'm pretty fussy about keeping OEM stock condition - but I am totally happy with the Smittybilt low-backs in my '57.

 

Mine will need everything from the frame up so won't be too original. My biggest issue is whether to change the color from blue to black

 

I went with the smittybilt lowbacks, and I llike them. However, they didn't match my seat frames exactly, so I'm makeing some adapters out of 1.5"x.75" flat bar to bolt them in.

 

maybe this...aftermarket for now...a redo of the originals later? you lose a little money but gain some time. sitting in them now...and having them redone later when you are ready if you decide you want to.

 

I went with the Bestop low back seats (and rear bench) for now till I can track down the original Tux seats.
They were a direct bolt on. They have 3 bolting hole options for spacing, depending on your frame.

 

The guy that was going to do my seats said 8 weeks minimum so I went ahead and ordered new seats, if I'm not happy with them I'll get the originals done later but I'm not waiting 8 weeks.

 

Have to be a real hard@ss to go 8 weeks without seats.

 

My seats are from the PO (one of them any way. No telling how many there were) Some kinda highbacks. They didn't fit right and had me at a funny angle to the steering and the shifters. I found myself some angle steel and made brackets that lowered the seats and and squared things up so the wheel was in line with my body position and I was not grabbing the 2w/4w shifter knob instead of the tranny gearshift. Lot more fun to drive when the shifters are where your hand thinks they should be. And you need about 7 1/2 inches between the seat top forward edge and the area were the wheel will be rubbing your belly. Or more. Plus the lowering of the seat also makes a difference in looking out the windshield and seeing the stoplights.

 

I would do whatever it takes to have to original seats in a Jeep. The springs in the seats are part of the suspension. Good luck

 

Looking to purchase this rear seat. Looks like my yr seat correct ?

 

The fasteners on the seat are like the ones I had in my 65 and 70. I would say yes.
My seat had a spring loaded pin that went on the back foot of the seat. You pulled the pin up and slid the seat back under the brackets. Once in place you release the pin and it secures the seat in place .
