Has anyone done the single wire alternator conversion on a six volt system, turning it into a 12 volt system and remember the alternator part number ? Looking for at least 63 amp but maybe 100-105 amp. Could be a two wire as well. Parts guys look at me like I'm nuts when I ask them. Thanks

Try asking about Lester Part number 7127-12 or 7127-3. This is a Delco 10si 63 amp alternator.

Or, the Lester Part number 7294-12 or 7294-3. This is a Delco 12si 94 amp alternator.

If the parts folks don't know about Lester numbers, quickly run away and go find an alternator rebuild shop.

The -12 and -3 indicate the "clocking" of the alternator. If you put the threaded mounting hole straight up and the pulley side facing away from you so you are looking at the back of the alternator, the -12 one will have the 2 spade terminals straight up, while the -3 one will have those terminals at 3 o'clock. You can get a -6 or a -9 as well, but those won't do well on a 4F or 4L 134 engine.

Bring the drive belt with you when you get the alternator so the correct pulley can be installed.

Willys Works in Tucson, AZ (telephone 520-888-5082) had a really neat bracket set to mount the 10si alternator to the 4F and 4L 134 engines. They also had the wide belt pulley as well and it wouldn't surprise me if they also had alternators on the shelf.

The bracket made things so easy that I'd be very disappointed if they no longer made it.

If you have a 12V 10SI on hand, adding that 6V regulator that Rich pointed to would be very easy. That's likely the cheapest route. These alternators are completely modular and easy to take apart and put together. All you need is a toothpick to hold the brushes back, and you can break down, assemble and clock to any position that you want.

I have to ad what I'm attempting to do, sorry. I want to convert from 6 to 12 volt system. My bad for not mentioning that earlier. So I am looking for the 12 volt alternator part numbers.

That Willys Works site is interesting. May give them a call, but I was looking to get this done this week, prior to traveling to Kempton for the picnic there.

Thanks guys. timgr, I still have an old 6 volt system and I'm converting the whole Jeep. I'm also going to install am M8000 Warn up front. The Jeep still has it's original wiring, unmolested.

Thanks guys. jeeper50, I am heading out to the barn right now to build that bracket. I guess that was my missing link. Well that and no parts store around here carries a 5/8 pulley for my Delco 94 amp alternator. What the fudge. We use to be able to walk in and buy em for like 5 bucks. I must be getting old. :rofl:elawson, I ended up using your numbers and bought the 94 amp.

Is it set up for 1 wire operation?

I'd not, hook up the charge warning lamp circuit and use a #53 bulb.
