Stock Wheel Color - White

I had to replace my old wheels with some new ones, reproductions but still stock. They showed up today and are a black satin finish. I do of course want mine to be "white". But what color "white"?

According to this thread, the color for my '70 (built in '69) would be "Champagne White - 432". Looking online, it appears to be a creamy off-white. PaintRef.Com; PaintScratch.com. Looking online, it seems if I want absolutely correct color, it's going to be expensive ($25 for a spray can; $50 for 8oz can). Frankly, it's a bit too yellow for my tastes, and the original wheels (while rusty) have a whiter look to them.



So I decided to look at alternatives; I'm the only guy that will know it's not a perfect match. Most folks I run into think the original Omaha Orange body color is a custom color because I like orange...

I went into my local auto parts store and found this stuff called "Duple-Color" Stone White PW1.


This looks pretty close, and it's only $7.99 for a spray can. Thoughts, warnings, or recommendations?

On my screen, it looks really beige-ish, but maybe not on yours. You are correct that the wheel color is a cream white, not a pure TiO2 white. Methinks if you paint them all the same with a color you like, no one will know the difference, and 90% won't care.

 

Both are beige-ish on my monitor, but the can at the parts place had a more white looking color. On the DupliColor site it's also more of a white.

Well, for $8 I can buy a can and paint something. See if I like it. You're right, if I like it the 10% that will grumble can take the can and...

I agree paint them rattle can white . no one will notice . other that stock wheels

 

My 55 appears to have the wheels powder coated white and it looks nice. It's how I got it.

 

I had a "duh" moment today...was out searching for Dupli-Color Stone White (PW1) as a "close enough" color when I realized that instead of spending $8 per 8oz can I could find a "close enough" rustoleum enamel that is $4 for 12oz.

First I decided to do a test shot. Front wheel is white, rear wheel is off-white. I like both, although I'm leaning towards the off-white on the rear wheel.


Of course, now it's obvious I need to clean up the hubs...

I've seen so many of these ... the front wheel looks too white. Back looks fine - I would not know it was repainted.

 

Nice looking Jeep! Off white. Also noticed the reflector on the hood, the red one for the rear is available from the Commando guys. Now to drive you crazy, the gas filler piece and door hinge is paint code #395, Glacier White.

 

I painted mine Glacier White as well, a color of 1967. Of course, I wanted to match the grill and windshield color.

 

Thanks. Yeah, you're killing me! When I restore the metal top I'll find a close color. Thanks for the tip on the commando; I've been looking for a red reflector (but not hard).

 

I don't think there originally were red reflectors on the rear sides (except Renegade I) when there were hood mounted reflectors in '69 - '70.

 

I've seen them in period photos... I'd post one but google photos decided I cannot do that.

Man, I love both of those Jeeps! Definitely agree that the off-white is the best color for the wheels, regardless of year. My '59 was supposed to be body color but I went with an antique white. I really want white wall tires on mine but I couldn't fine any 16" white walls skinny enough to fit my original rims. I love the look of white walls on an old Jeep.

 

So what paint did you put on the rear wheel? I need to do mine before long.

 

Rust-O-Leum American Accents Heirloom White satin.

3 cans covers 5 wheels. Once tired and installed I'll post pix.

What size are those wheels and tires? I am not happy with the tires I put on my Jeep, they are too tall and look kind of silly, in my opinion. Plus I love the look of the whitewall street tires like yours, even though I know they are not period correct for mine. Beautiful Jeep, by the way.

 

Greenshirt, what is your suspension recipe? Is that a 2.5" lift? What is rear tire size? I like the stance.

 

Thanks. The tires are 235/75R15. Brand is Cooper Trendsetter SE. Think the wheels are 15 x 5.5.

Had to order them on line. Couldn't find them at the tire shop. Finding the white wall, without paying for "antique tires" was a challenge

 

I'm trying to track down those Kelly Wintermark HT tires with the white wall. (Same tire size as you posted)
