I have a 68 Commando w/225 and t14. Recently the transfer case started grinding(acting like it was trying to go into gear) when normal driving in 2 wheel high, when I put in 4 high(leaving hubs in free) it clears up. Any ideas? Thanks

Maybe one of the bearings on the output shaft, when you put it in 4wd you are actually connecting the front out put to the rear which eliminates the relative motion between them. You can pull bottom cover off pretty easily and look inside, try to move things around by hand in 2wd and 4wd.

Sounds like you are due for a rebuild of the transfer case, which is not very difficult.

Well I assumed dana 18, so I'm less sure about the 20, but opening the cover is still a good starting point.

The stock Commando transfer case shifter leaves a lot to be desired. When everything is adjusted right, they shift OK. If the shifter is sloppy or mis-adjusted, it may cause the issues you are having.
I would be looking at the transfer case shift linkage first.

First thing to do is take the shifter apart and clean out all the old hardened grease and dirt. Then assemble with a lightweight grease and see how it works. They get worn, but they typically work a lot better if cleaned out. Follow the diagram in the TSM and make sure nothing is broken or missing.

    Look here - http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/8-TransferCase.pdf - I don't see any obvious adjustments.

The support tube that connects the shifter mechanism to the transfer case allows for adjustment, especially in cases like the original poster.

Though its not supposed to be adjusted, but over the years, I've had to "adjust" them to make the crazy shift linkage work correctly.
To adjust, back out the grub screws, rotate the tube 90 degrees (altering the distance and getting away from the drilled divots), and snug the grub screws. Test shifting action. Adjust again, if necessary. When it shifts properly, torque down the grub screws.
This might not be by the book, but it can improve shifting action, making shift lever positions line up with the detents in the two shift rails.
