Here's the Story of my great Score on a 8274 and the way I went about mounting it on my CJ3B.

Story: I went to get an air compressor from a buddy of mine a while back that was cleaning out his garage. after going through diff woodworking stuff I'm walking out the door and he says hey any chance your interested in an old Winch? Well sure I say.. so we go digging and to my surprise out from under a bench covered in saw dust comes a Warn 8274! in a box. He says it was on a truck back in the 80's and after a mishap with a tree the truck was totaled and the winch came off, and was stored in a box. He vaguely remembered doing some work on it.

So we talked, I said how much, He says how about $150? I say sounds fine with me!!! When I get home and look through the box I find it has a brand new motor on the winch, a WARN mounting plate, new remote, cover, as well as spare motor and other odd and ends. SCORE!!!

Project. I want to mount the winch on my 3B but I really want to sink it down in the frame.

    Here's my 3B

    Here's the winch:

The clearance is very tight between my front crosmember/bumper and the grill. I don't have a stock bumper I have a 3" piece of square stock welded in with d ring mounts.

OK so after some finessing of the grill and fender bolts I was able to slide the winch down into place drill the two bottom mounting holes and do a mock up of winch location.

Here's the frame with the holes drilled for bottom winch mount holes and the opening cut for cable.

Here's my cool old WARN mounting Plate (I dig the W on the front), after some careful measuring and cutting I was able to modify it on the left to fit around my steering box and cut it out on the right to fit around the frame and hook under my frame on the right side with a tab.

Ok so I felt really good about the right side how the tab hooked under the frame. I was also able to add a L bracket on the top side of the Warn plate that tied into and reinforced side of my right frame rail. the Left side however was not so good. After playing around with cardboard a lot I came up with this bracket and got it fabricated up that would tie the front of the winch mount into the back edge of the mount as well the side of my left frame rail and also to the top of frame horn. Also it had to fit around my steering box so I could still take that off if I needed.

Here's what I came up with:

    Here's the mount clamped on:

Here you can see the bracket for the left side as well as the L bracket on the right side:

That's pure beauty. I am happy for you. And, moreover, it can be useful.:p

    Here's the winch mounted up:

I had to remove the top cover for inspection and also for room so I could drill through the side of the grill shroud to run my wires.
Winch was super clean inside. Note: It's a PITA to keep the little gear that hooks the motor to the winch! Holding backward pressure on the winch disconnect knob lets the fork hold the gear so you can slide the motor on when re assembling winch. Don't make the mistake I did of sealing up the top cover with silicone before you dry tested this a bunch of times and get the feel for it an extra set of hands helps. messy!

I don't have a picture, but I found that both of my 1/4" holes in the upper cover where the motor mounts onto it had been stripped out! I had to have a buddy tig them up and add heicoil the holes. The motor must have gotten hit in the accident years ago and damaged it. Now it's stronger then new.

Also there is no drain or fill hole on the winch so make sure to clean it out an add new fluid before putting the top cover back on.

    Now for the wiring:

I went with 1-0 gauge wire for posative and negative cables:

I have Always had a battery disconnect on my Willys but with the added winch load I needed to upgrade it. I read that a 8274 can pull as much as 450A with a hard pull. I went on Amazon and got a Marine battery disconnect rated at 350A continuous with a 600A rating for a min.

I also got these really nice heavy duty Pico Battery leads which I like a lot. Worth the $12.

I have to admit I cried a bit when I had to drill a 3 5/8" hole in my fire wall! but on ward and upward! you can see the hole for my original disconnected.

    Here's the under dash picture:
(note this switch can be surface mounted as well and has little legs to hold it up in the air for wire clearance. I cut those off and cleaned the back up with a dremel for my application. (sorry for the fuzzy picture but you get the idea)

Here's the back side of the disconnect with the 1-0 wires run to it. They tuck nicely around the fender and under the custom optima battery mount I made and through the side of the grill fan shroud to the winch. It's very tight under the battery mount and through the grill and the 1-0 wire can be a PITA to flex around.

Here's the wires coming out of the side of the radiator shroud: told you it was close!

    And here's the finished product!

Here's a side shot, there's about 3/16 clearance between the closest part of the winch and the grill:

    Impressions:
I gotta say, this winch is FAST! I haven't really had a chance to real world test it out but I can't wait. As far as weight, It didn't really sag my front end down at all that I could tell. I did turn up my RS9000 adjustable shock though to help with the added weight.

Total investment with rebuilt Winch, wire, disconnect, oil etc. I would say is about $280. I'm happy! Hopefully this will help others who want to mount a 8274 on there Flat fender! It was a fun project.

I believe the Warn 8274 is the single best modification a man could do to a vintage Jeep. Well done... You have a very nice Jeep

Awesome. I'm glad you went to the trouble to put it down low with fairlead through the bumper. Good job making it work with the Saginaw conversion too! I mounted my winch between the rails on my A1 but didn't have to battle with the steering. Nice work and a nice jeep.

Do you know which mount plate did you used? I like the idea of what you did and would like to replicate if possible. Great job!

    Thanks

Not sure but it looked like this. From a full size pickup I'm pretty sure. You could get a piece of 1/4" bent up and be close to the same.

It's is, and the motor on it was never run. Also Thanks for your posts on mounting up yours, Those where some of the only good pics I could find wile surfing around. I almost went full custom mount like you did but modifying the existing one worked out wanted it to. I still like yours where the front plate doesn't block the winch so much. It looks great.
