What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

My speedometer still worked, but the odometer numbers were rotted away. I couldn't find the exact one, so I ordered a decal sheet for a 55-56-57 Chevy, Olds, Pontiac. $5.00 with free shipping on ebay. I pulled the speedo all apart and cleaned and lubed everything, pulled out the odometer spool and wire brushed it and carefully wrapped the new numbers. I wire wheeled and painted the trim rings and cleaned the glass.'

Before the final assembly I found a square jewelers file that fit the speedo drive and chucked it up in my cordless drill. I spun the speedo up to 60 MPH and watched as the odometer tenths spool went DOWN from 7 to6 to5 to4 to 3 tenths. The sheet of numbers for the Chevy start at 0-1 on the top and go down to 9 at the bottom the Willys numbers run the opposite direction starting at 0-9 on the top and going down to 1 at the bottom. The best laid plans of mice and men. I ordered another sheet of numbers and hope they are correct.

 

Day before yesterday I got the wifey to help test fit an ACME hard top that I drove 400 miles round trip in the XJ to pickup in Houston.

Needs a lot of cleaning plus one hole and a few small cracks patched but for 100 dollars I think I did well lol.

@garage gnome whipped this distributor up for me. I recall mentioning a Pontiac distributor a few months ago and heard something about the cannonball run.

Old trusty...



I removed the vacuum advance since I won't be using it. The distributor had a rough ride home. The cap was cracked in a few places but I applied some liquid tape. Hopefully, it will seal it off for now. The tachometer had to be switched over to the V8 setting so it'd read right. Seems to run fine.

Time for a progressive Carburetor.

 

I like the way you think. Ideally, I would use the 2g carb I already have but the hood would need to be clearanced some, and I'd need to make a new throttle linkage. IMO, nothing is going to help this engine in the power department as much as a refresh would.

 

We have non-stop rain, so I had to adapt and modify the rear of my Jeep..

 

It repells the rain in fact it's magic.

On the XJ yesterday morning after I got home from work I changed the Front diff fluid, swapped the fluid in the PS reservoir and hit all the grease zerks.

 

I got the axles back under!

 

Repainted my windshield frame.

I was doing some welding on the CJ5, and decided to clean up the shop a little. I pulled the cover off the 55 Olds and was appalled at how dirty it had gotten under the car cover. I fired it up and brought it down to the house to wash it and Old Man Willis got jealous, so he had to have a through cleaning also.

In preparation for this week's trip, I decided to go ahead and swap out the diff cover and check on the gears since the install. They look fine to me. I'll know in ~140 miles if I set them up correctly.





The old air filter setup was complete garbage and a huge air restriction. I went with a 2" hose and exhaust pipe. Fancy compared to my old plumbing adapter. Ha. Hopefully, the air filter gets here Thursday or early Friday. I also discovered the nuts that hold the carburetor together were loose.

 

That is exactly what my brothers car looked like! Man that thing was a tank. Love the polished steel dash, "we don't need no stinking padded dash!" Nice rigs!

 

But it looks small compared to the WIllys Wagon.

 

When my dad and I rebuilt the engine in my brothers, pulled the pistons, they were the size of coffee cans if I recall.
