Thanks a lot! My rr fender is torn where the spare goes and I want to relocate the rim to the back. Besides, I did not like a big tire on the side, that suits better for the thin stock rims. Thanks again!

Seen lots of various methods to secure a spare tire along with the added gear that we all like to carry such as a Hi-lift jack.....maybe a cooler or even a spare fuel can.......and not saying that any method is better than the next .........although in my experience that fold down tire rack can be a little heavy to get back up in position with anything larger than just an average sized spare.......I'm a bigger fan of the swing out design...

I agree, my fold down carrier is really heavy to get back up with a 33" tire on an aluminum rim.

This... physics of a dead lift / bench press.

I am a fan of the swing out.

Will be adapting similar design to a swing out.

And a trip hazard when down, not to mention more difficult to load gear through the tailgate.

I understand that but I think in the last 40 years of owning this jeep I have needed to open the tailgate maybe twice. I looked at the swingouts of course but they looked too heavy. my old side mount is out of the question because the rear quarter panels are 90% bondo. And I hate hitting trees and fence posts.

You don't even need tools to get fans now. Both of these were retained only with plastic clips. Big one is a Ford Taurus supposedly coveted by the hot rod guys, twin out of a Focus. Couldn't decide so I took both. Half hour and $63. Stay tuned, either one works for me with what looks like minor mods.

Purple and Green Santa arrived this afternoon.

Brought me my 'freshly re-minted' saginaw steering gear for a 77 CJ5 from AC-DELCO, courtesy of Summit Racing...

Bolted on my '69's custom mount I've fab'd up, rolled out the thin style original tie rod drop link (? I think that's what it is called), connected the pitman arm and gave everything a cursory eyeball 'toe-end' alignment. I need to get crack-a-lackin on the rest of the steering.

Gotta decide on if I cut the worm off the original steering shaft, or if I go to Summit and find me nice replacement steering shaft... ug.

Honestly, I want to do it too. What's holding me back is I have all the parts from the wheel (and an extra with no cracks) all the way to the TRE's from the original ross v6 version (if I could find the dang outer cover for the box) including the pieces off the cross member... That'd make a nice pile of parts for someone needing them is my thought, then I get all 'old style look' again...

I moved my tail light wiring to the inside of the cab, reinstalled my backup lights. Right now they are hooked to the center post of a two way toggle switch. I intend to drop the transmission to replace the clutch this winter, while the floor is open I will hook the reverse switch up to the other side of the toggle switch. Then I will be able turn on the the back up lights manually or flip the toggle down the other way and have it come on automatically with the transmission switch.

I took the back up lights off about 20 years ago and glassed over the holes before i painted it. I got to looking into replacement LED bulbs that fit into the light sockets in these back up lights and wanted to give them a try. The LEDs are extremely bright! I will now be able to use the old backup lights as off road night lights, that is the idea anyway.

I used Farm Jeep Willy, chained to my John Deere 440 loader, bucket dug in ground, to winch two spruce trees leaning toward the house while I cut them. They were around 40 inches through, as my 660 Stihl with a 20 inch bar barely reached from both sides. The jeep and loader slid about 3 or 4 feet during the winching of the one tree, filling the bucket, but the house is now free from any shade or possible trees falling on it. The smaller trees I had my son push on with the loader as I cut them. I have a ton of cleanup to do now, but my wife is almost uncontrollably happy to have the house uncovered and unthreatened.

I'm working on a '68 jeep. The PO got the jeep from his grandpa and completely disassembled it to restore. He gave up and I bought the pile of parts. I've been working on the tub and now I'm working on the dashboard. Here's a picture the PO took before taking the jeep apart:

Here's the dash after it's been sandblasted and primed. There are a lot of extra holes to fill: switches, two rectangular radio holes, and an hour meter hole:

I've welded all the holes. Now I'm trying to figure out where to drill holes for 3 more meters. I want to have oil pressure, voltage, temperature, front gas tank gauge, and rear gas tank gauges:

I'm putting the jeep back together to drive, not a restoration. I didn't want to use any bondo, but there were lots of pin holes between all the dot welds I made. I ended up applying a little bit of bondo:

I sprayed gray primer over the dash. The holes I welded aren't obviously visible, but certainly not hidden either. The two big holes for radios are gone:
