New Perkins CJ-6

I went shopping this weekend on a hail mary and brought home a Perkins powered CJ-6 with a full Meyer hard top. My boss was browsing craigslist one day and stumbled on an obscure, poorly written ad for it. I mentioned something about wanting a Perkins powered CJ and he overheard me and said " I saw one on craigslist the other day". My response was the typical "I call BS on that" but he forwarded the ad to me and I sent an e-mail to the "anonymous" craigslist ad. No phone number, no name but there was an address. A week went by with a few more e-mails sent with no reply. So.....I packed up some things, delivered a rear end and an FC-150 to a buddies house that was about 2 hours away from the CJ-6 and we set out to find it from his place knowing only an address and knowing the ad had expired a few days earlier....lol.... We found it sitting in the field still but nobody was home. We checked it out and went to lunch to go kill some time. When we came back about an hour and a half later the gentleman that owned it was home. We checked it out, made a deal and I hauled it home. It has some front end damage from running into the back of a truck (off road wood cutting incident) that pushed the radiator into the fan, but he says it drove to the spot where it was sitting. There are some holes in the story but for the price and what it is I couldn't pass it up. Light surface rust in the bed from some foam backed carpet that held some moisture but otherwise rust free. Look like I need an off site acct to host pics which I don't have....but I do have pictures....:)

By the VIN I would guess it was #449 produced since the inception of the perkins in 61 or 62? This one is a 66. First order of business will be tracking down a radiator since it is completely gone. The fan is a bit bent up but hopefully fixable. I already have a decent hood and fenders from a postal jeep that i helped a buddy part out. The cowl needs a little straightening too. Anyone know if the radiator is the same or similar enough to a F-head or V-6 equipped early CJ?

I looked in a couple of '66 factory parts books I have and no mention of anything for a Perkins or Diesel.

That is a score and a 6 too. fb

    Nice find!

Years ago I was stationed for a year in the Azores on Teceira. The Portugese Air Force had a whole fleet of cj6's with the diesel. They were all right hand drive however. It was odd -- the convention was to drive on the right side just like here, but for some reason they had the right hand drive jeeps...

Jim Allen's Illustrated buyers guide for Jeep indicates they were available from 61-69 though few were built and most went overseas. I think, and this is only a guess, that this one is number 449 from the start of production in 61 which translates to about 75 units per year. However, records indicate there were only 20-28 produced in 61 and there were no records after that for production numbers. The VIN starts with 8410 which indicates CJ-6 (84) and open body diesel (10).

I see you're on Bainbridge. I'm not far from you in North Bend.

Very cool. Looks much better than what I drug home. A photo of the radiator and engine side of the grille would help in determining what type of radiator you might have.

Wow. I may need to come look at your Jeep. So at least I can say I have seen one. I have a stock '66 CJ5 :v6:, same color.

Are you going to keep it stock? :D

    Oh... Welcome from Bainbridge Island.

I wonder if the rims are original, no hub cap bumps. Are the rims 15 inch?

    nickmil In mothballs.

Very cool! There is a member that has a thread in the builds section with a Perkins powered Jeep. Might search for it and contact him. He might be able to answer some Perkins specific questions like the one about the radiator.
Edit: just did some searching and his member name is compostwerks. The last post in his build thread was May 24th. I believe he is in agriculture so he may have been busy with work during spring/summer.

Come on out and check it out sometime. I plan to keep it relatively stock at this point. I don't plan to do anything to it besides fixing the front of the frame that can't be "undone". The patchwork on the front of the frame will probably require the front to be replaced from the shocks forward and I will probably box it back to the steering box to keep anything from happening again or at least minimize the chances. Everything else will be bolt on that happens to it under my watch. The wheels are 16". No clue if they are stock or not..... Those are gonna get set aside and it will get some extra 15" wheels and tires I have laying around that are "runnable". These tires hold air, but that's about it.

Nickmil- I've been all through "compostwerks" thread doing research when I heard about this one. I need to review it and have another look at his photos. The radiator is missing completely from this one but the fan, although bent, is still in the jeep. Thanks

    A fine find indeed!
I would be leery of a "fixed" fan, even in a low rpm application.
Hopefully you can find a straight replacement.
