Throttle and Choke Cable 1955 CJ5

So I have searched around for this and have not been able to find out a definitive answer.

I have a 1955 CJ5. I am slowly working on bringing it back into shape. I bought it 4 years ago.

Finally I am at a point where I can work on it.

It only had one knob which said "CHOKE" but it certainly acts like a hand throttle.

I understand that they had both. I just ordered a new Dash and new throttle and choke cable, etc... I know which holes they go in on the dash...

My question is, under the hood,

where exactly does the choke connect to? And where exactly does the hand throttle connect to?

Does anyone have any pictures of the connections?

Here are pics from an early '56. Should be the same as your '55.

Thanks for posting those, I am not sure I can follow the second cable.

In your first picture is that the choke cable?

His first picture is for the choke as you say.

Where does the second one connect? I can't seem to tell from the photos, probably is my lack of understanding of how the hand throttle works.

In my foggy mind it would need to be connected to the throttle linkage somewhere?

I am pretty sure my choke cable is connected where that one is in the first picture, and I can tell you for sure it functions as a throttle, is that normal or a known issue? I would think the choke cable should just operate the choke plate??

"Throttle" goes where the spring is hanging (in this pic)[IMG][

The choke cable also acts as a throttle, because when you close back on the choke you also want to raise the RPM's of the engine. In a couple of the pictures you can see that the throttle cable is also held to the bracket where the choke cable is held. In the bottom picture there is a bent tab with a hole in it. The end of the throttle cable goes through there and has a little stop with a set screw on it. The throttle cable itself can't be connected to the linkage solid because you couldn't move the accelerator linkage if it was. If you pull the throttle knob it will pull the accelerator linkage, and stepping on the accelerator pedal allows the bracket with the little hole to simply slide on the throttle wire.

You need to put one of these (cable stops) on the end of the cable.

    Thank you all very much!

Now it makes a lot more sense.

Let's hope it makes sense when I get back under the hood!

I see what you mean, I don't have a bent tab with a hole in it. I suppose that can just be made easily enough?

Do you know what the name of the little clip that connects to the bracket for the choke cable is called? If I am correct, I need another one of those to keep the two cables separate on the one bolt on the bracket that connect to the carb?

The little tab with the hole can be made easily enough. The other one can too with a bit more effort, it just needs to hold the cable in place so it doesn't move when you pull or push on the knob.

The factory hand throttle tab actually looks homemade anyway. The HARD piece to find is the bracket with two clamps on it for both cables.

I bet that is hard to find an original one of those. I am trying to determine what to do there. It almost seems like bending out the bracket to make it wider for both cables and putting a longer bolt in it and just tightening it so they can't move might work.

If not, I am thinking of putting a longer bolt through and somehow attaching another clip to the back side.

I guess it is good that as Glenn posted, I am just trying to make sure the outside cable remains static when it is getting pushed and pulled. That doesn't seem like precision is needed to accomplish that.

Those are both good ideas. The lawnmower idea got me thinking about the bicycle industry...like shifter and brake cable holders... I am also going to go to my local hardware store and look around in their parts pins for something I can modify.

I'd look for a lawnmower/small engine repair place, someplace that's been in business for a looong time. They're most likely to have some sturdy clamps for old wire-wound wire control cables like that.

I think I was able to find the bracket with both clamps on eBay, or maybe even here. I do know I have one in my stash of build parts, and breathed a big sigh of relief when I checked that piece of unobtainium off the list.

Yep, I remember reading in the past something about a piece of this system that was hard to find. I just really started working on this old Jeep, thankfully I am not really concerned about keeping everything 100% accurate. Maybe in time I will search harder for the actual pieces, but I just want to have a working choke and a working hand throttle. I don't even know why I want a hand throttle, I probably will never use it, but then again, who knows?

I'm guessing the hand throttle would have been used for operating the PTO with the drive train in neutral, or a rudimentary cruise control for the farm applications.
