Help with changing out alternator

    I am in the process of changing out the stock alternator on a newly purchased CJ5. Its a mOtorola 35 AMP, with an external voltage regulator.

    I'd like to up the amperage and go with one having an internal regulator. Any help on how to accomplish bypassing the external one would be much appreciated.

    There are a lot of threads about that on the forum, search for "10si" or "alternator". There are also restorers on here that may be interested in buying your original motorola to help fund your project.

    I put in a 3 wire alternator I got for 35 bucks new from rock auto. I mistakenly thought it was a 1 wire unit and didn't pay attention. When you don't have a regulator on the 3 wire one it charges at 18plus volts and will wreck your battery and melt stuff. Always use a volt meter to check to make sure you have the proper voltages at the proper places. I did and averted disaster. The regulators are now solid state and aren't very expensive. You *may* be able to just reuse your old one since all it needs to do is regulate the voltage to above 12 volts. The plug *may* be the same for terminal one and two. I may be wrong and if so will be corrected in ...3...2...1......

    The Delco alternator has three connections from the factory.

    1) Battery - this is the wire that charges the battery. The Delco "one wire" alternator (a modified alternator, not a factory part) uses only this wire.
    2) Sense - a wire that measures the battery voltage and adjusts the alternator output voltage up or down accordingly.
    3) Field - provides field current when you start the engine.

    What 46v6 is describing is connecting a standard factory three-wire Delco incorrectly as if it were a one-wire alternator. With the sense terminal not connected, the alternator will make maximum output all the time, and cook your battery.

    Another point - if you have an ammeter, make sure it and its wiring has the capacity to use with a bigger/stronger alternator. If it's a factory ammeter, the wiring will be undersized for a significantly larger alternator.

    My preference would be to remove any ammeter with its under-dash wiring and substitute a voltmeter. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml

    simple #2 can be connected to battery lug on back of alt . #1 to charge light

    Tell him which way the terminals 1 & 2 go in the two different types of alternator. one is parallel and the other are inline with each other. I just don't remember which it is for internally regulated.

    Thanks guys! I decided to go ahead with a replacement as similar to the original as I could find...not much out there! How does on go about selling the Motorola 35 Amp to someone interested?
