Had some knocking going on so decided to adjust intake and exhaust tappets/valves last weekend. Went through the whole procedure (you tube Hanibal 16577: 2 great videos on how to do correctly). Checked and double checked the gap at .016 exhaust and .018 intake and then put all back together w new gaskets, etc. started her back up and lo and behold, a little noiser than before at a little higher pitch. Went for a ride and also seems to be idling at higher rpm. Haven't put a tach on it yet but will this weekend.
So, ideas on: a. Why noiser? And b. Why rpm higher?
    Thanks guys for your help.

When I built my Fhead, it always made a lot of valve train noise. I adjusted the tappets many times and I never got the noise to go away. I had never heard an Fhead run before I did it, so I assumed that it was either something I did wrong, something wore out or they just made valve train noise. I am sorry I cannot answer your question, maybe someone else can and at the same time maybe elucidate me on my own similar issue.

I'm having the same issue, after adjusting the valves I actually pulled the oil pan to make sure it wasn't excess clearance on a rod bearing.

I can live with it but it's annoying. I've been told it could be related to a weak valve spring.

To me it seems backwards that the intake valves need a higher clearance than the exhaust. I've got the same noise complaints too.

Since you would have had to disconnect accelerator linkage to get the valve cover off I would at first suspect something going on with that.....maybe binding or return spring not as tight so not pulling linkage all the way back?
