I have a 1962 cj5 with a t-90a trans and a t- 18 transfer case . When i drive in any gear there is a grind . When the transmission is in neutral there is no grind . When i put the transmission in gear and the transfer case in neutral i hear the grind . Question is it the transmission or the transfer case ? Also i changed the oil in the transfer case but not in the transmission yet . I found no metal in the oil of the transfer case . I am LOST!!! Please any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you put the transfer case in neutral that stops any gears from turning in the transfer. This surely means transmission forward. I would take the top off the transmission and give it a good look-see but sounds like the T90 is failing.

Don't forget the intermediate shaft/gear. The gear of course still turns even with the t-case in neutral. ;) The shaft is notorious for wear unless it is a hardened shaft like would come from Novak. Finding no metal though when drained is interesting. If you don't find anything in the transmission pull the t-case pan off and see if the intermediate gear wiggles at all.

+2 on the transfer case intermediate gear/shaft.

Does it when tranny is in gear but the tc is in neutral?
Does not do it when tranny is in neutral and tc is in gear?

Maybe throwout bearing? Although I would think the TO bearing would make noise with the clutch pedal all the way out no matter which combination.

yes and when going down the road . does not do it when tranny is in neautral.

Seems to me to be only 2 options-the rear main bearing in the T90 or, as stated, the D18 intermediate gear needles. That there is no noise in neutral suggests the T90 input bearing and the mainshaft/cluster gear needles are likely ok.

So your weighing towards the transfer case ?

Is it actually more of a roar than a grind?

Glenn it is louder than the engine .

Ouch, that's loud. The t-case intermediate shaft is the easiest to check since no disassembly is needed. You need to find the problem asap.

I've had three intermediate shafts go south on me and every time there was substantial metal flakes in the oil when I drained the t-case. If the noise is as bad as you say and there is no metal in the t-case oil I'd suspect it's something else.

I agree totally with this, and I've had the same situation with intermediate shafts even had one lock the intermediate gear up. I just think it would be a good idea to check it in order to rule it out or not. He hasn't said if he drained the transmission or not, that's another unknown. Very well could be the rear bearing.

Finally got out to the jeep today. Changed the water in the transmission . Yes water . Got about a half a pint of gear oil . A whole pint of clear water . Clean it out by putting fresh gear oil in and draining that . Found a very few shavings in the oil . reassembled filled with fresh gear oil . Started it up let the clutch out , i heard the noise . pushed the clutch in , the noise went away ! Put the T case in nuetral let out on the clutch i could hear the noise bu the fly wheel . Through out bearing . shew !!! I havent changed a clutch since i was 14 . Time to do some reading . Whats a good place to order clutch and through out bearing ??????????

Throw out bearing? It should be noisy when you push the clutch in, not quiet. I think you have something else going on.

Did the noise change at all? Did you drive it, move it in the driveway, anything? How long have you had the Jeep? Does it sit outside without a top? Rain can get in the transmission down through the shifter housing.

Yes it did change a little . i pulled it forward and backward . i have only had the jeep a year . It sat outside with the tub off that is where the water came from . as above with the t case in neutral and the tranny in gear it sounds the same . when moving the sound is the same .
