Harbor Freight

    Or am I thinking of a 1-ton having the 500# limit at full extension? Either way, I still wouldn't get under it. :)

    Again , I have no issue with all you have stated.........everything no matter what it is should be treated as if it could fail at anytime...straps , cables , slings , chains. I hauled structural steel for many years and I've seen cranes fail......cables broken , 100 ft gantry cranes fall over on the docks...........stuff happens. Just have to keep yourself out of harms way the best you can.......Most things engineered in our World today have a 150% rating factor built in........can't speak on behalf of this stuff but I'm sure there specifications and redundancy are in line just to keep themselves out of court.

    I'm not defending nor in Love with Harbor Freight tools...........I know the risk if I over-extend it's capacity......I treat most of there stuff as throw-a-way , if it fails I can always scab on some additional Iron and it will live for another day!

    With that strapping on top it doesn't look like it could have folded that way, but I guess the picture doesn't lie.

    I think the key is to work smarter and use the best tool you have....your brain. Have had a hf hoist for years.

    The strapping did it's job...........as well as the boom did it's job. Both of which were immovable for the amount of weight / force that was being applied...........the ram's lifting capacity or force PSI in this instance was greater than the strength of that tube at that point..............had the tube been a thicker wall or perhaps that attachment point been wider or had additional metal underneath.................the failure would have just moved down stream to the next point of weakness..................

    Who is to say that this manufacture didn't built this in as a safety feature ............when the weight lifted exceeds the overall capacity?

    I agree. Without a preload tension on that strap, it is a safety feature, not a strengthening gusset. The tube has to bend in order to transfer any stress to the strap.

    To truly add support, that srap would either be webbed to create an I-beam, or a turnbuckle system would be utilized in the same fashion as the strap, but with added preload.

    I agree, the strapping did do it's job. I guess it's an illusion, but it would appear that if the tube was straightened back out the strapping would be too long and would fold some....there again I guess illusion comes into play here. :)

    Highly unlikely to ever see one fold without grossly overloading it. If you try to swing a 1000 lbs on a 500 pound rated extension you should expect failure.

    Except that picture is 10 years old and there engine hoist are built different and heavier now.

    005.JPG Made a dolly from some 2" square tubing, 2 halves of an old drawbar and Honda hubs/wheels. Engine hoist not altered so it can be detached and perform as HF intended. Very handy when needed outside of the garage.

    Cool...Love it!

    What about replacing the front dolly bracket with a piece of angle iron that runs parallel with the front of the hoist? It seems like it could rock side to side and things could get ugly.

    Actually the way it mounts to the drawbar pieces lock it into place. Here is a picture to help explain:

    I have had one for years and a couple of years ago changed the ram to air over hydraulic, pretty simple, works great and fast, but yes we must all think first about what we are using it for and not push beyond its rated specs?

    I "think" early Buick/Land Rover 215 V-8 to T90. Until proven otherwise, that is what it is.
    It is available for adoption.
