Need some experienced advice. Found that my dipstick tube had been brazed together at one point. While working on the engine, I banged into it and broke it off where it was brazed, about a 1/4 in from block. can someone tell me if these are just pressed in or do I have to take the oil pan off to replace it

    Gotta be a 304.

They are pressed in. You may have to remove the pan to get the broken stub out. A screw on a slide hammer sometimes works. Lots about this on the full-size Jeep (Wagoneer) sites. The 360 and 401 use the same part.

I went through two dipsticks when I noticed at Mac's boneyard the six cylinder motors had a support coming from off of the valve cover, so I made my own out of plumbers tape and it hasn't broken again in four years. [IMG]

Sorry for the late reply. Yes it is a 304, sorry about that. Thanks for the advice and help. Probably going to try a lag bolt to get the stub out, really don't want to remove oil pan. New part is being shipped, so I'll wait till then to try and remove the old dipstick till new part gets here. I'll post my results. I think the old jeep is jinxed, fix one thing and something else breaks. 1 step forward 2 steps back. Thanks again

Sorry to hijack, but mine on the 360 is loose in the hole, it's that normal?

fix one thing and something else breaks. 1 step forward 2 steps back = The opposite : one thing breaks but you fix 2!
At the end you have a new Jeep, but less money of course. parts are on the market.
What is nice is to have everytime a better Jeep.

I had my 304 "professionally" rebuilt and when I got it back the dip stick tube had been put in wrong and is bent all to h@#l. I use the word professionally loosely here. Anyway. would anyone know what the length from the block stop to the top of the tube is? The one they shoved back in may or may not be the original and because it was so bent I bought a new one from Bulltear which is right at 6.5 inches shorter. Bulltear forgot to include the dip stick itself so I can't compare the length of dip stick coming out of the bottom of the tube at the oil pan side.

Don't know the length, but I bought the one from Bulltear and it was an exact fit.
