Help With Powr-lok Identification

Picked up a powr-lok limited slip off a craigslist deal and I assumed it was 19 spline for a later 19 splined dana 44 but after getting home I counted the splines and came up with 20. From a little bit of research I found that 20 spline means that it is for a Dana 53 out of a Jeep truck. It seems like it is in good rebuildable condition but I have no use for it as I only have Dana 44's laying around.

Is it worth trying to find new side gears for this carrier of just sell it and try to find a 19 splined carrier?

Pictures for those who like that.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Post a picture of the numbers that should be stamped into the side of the case.

Does the "44 STD" on it mean anything?

Post up a photo of the side of the case, and there should be 5 stamped numbers, usually ending with "x". The end shot you posted doesn't look familiar to me as a Power Lok, but I could be wrong.

A model 53 differential will never fit into a D44 axle.

The "STD" typically indicates it to be a series IV unit (for use with 3.73 and lower gears).

Surprising, because the 53 was used in Jeep trucks prior to, say, the late 60s? If I guessed, I would expect a truck from that era with a 53 to have 4.88s or 4.09s ... at some point it was replaced by the 60-2 for the middle-weight trucks, and even by 1972 a 60-2 would be 4.09 standard and 4.88 optional. My 1982 J20 is the middle weight rating - though 8 lug - and it's 3.73s, despite Jeep's overall trend to numerically lower ratios.

    3.92 or lower for a 1965-ish J-truck with a 53 would surprise me.

I'm talking lower / or slower gearing which is in fact numberically higher.
Lots of confusion depending on whether one looks at only the numbers or the results of those numbers.

3.73 through 5.89 is the case split for a Dana 53 series IV unit.
3.54 and higher (numberically lower) for Dana 53 series III unit.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I have no use for this power lock do these have any value to them? I would like to sell it so I can grab a power lock for my dana 44.

Maybe kinda sorta. I had one that I couldn't sell. I ended up selling or trading it to Herm. I forget which. List it here in the F/S section. Maybe someone will want it. If not, call Herm and see if he will work a trade/deal with you.

Try the "for sale" sections at ifsja.org and fsjnetwork.com ... if you are sure it's for a 53.

the op never did post a picture of the stamping numbers on the "side" of the case and not the #'s on the ends. those numbers will tell what it is

Yeah I'm beginning to wonder just what it is.

dafeeesshh you have a side view with the case number on it ?
Any date on the ring gear ?

Dana 44 ring gear ID is 5-1/2" and ring O.D. is 8-1/2".
So what size is the ring gear on this thing ?

Maybe I'll buy it and modify to 30 spline Dana 44 if everything else checks out.

    Maybe a Trac Lok ?

Maybe not. Can't find a listing for the 53.

The numbers on his casting (44 STD and C30761) are the same as a 1960's Dana 44 Powr Lok having 19 splines.
I'm thinking it has a special shaped 2 piece ring gear (see the pic) on a D44 Powr Lok case.
I'm guessing the side gears can be changed out.

Normally a Dana 53 has 12 ring gear bolts but this (special 53 Powr Lok gear ?) has 10 bolts like a Dana 44 ?

If it has 20 splines its from a dana 45 out of 1958 or 1959 chevy half ton. Have 2 of those in my garage.
The dana 45 is a hybrid with carrier parts from the model 44 and pinion sized from a model 53.
Looks like it still has the ring gear, does it say the tooth counts?
If it is 3.73 or lower and you have the pinion I'll trade you a 4 series power lok that has 19 splines.
Dana 45's power lok's that are for 3.73 or lower are rarer then hens teeth. Only an option with a Hydramatic.
Most were 3.92's (what I have).
