Yea, I was just looking at that... it looks damaged (2nd photo) and used(?)... but if it is used, it not NOS, right?

 

Has anyone ever tried to move a heating filament from one of these aftermarket fuel gages onto a burned out original fuel gage?

Hmmmm... I'll need to shrink my fingers...

I appreciate there are calibration questions to be investigated.

 

I've gotten four of them from that seller all were dusty but unused. He used to be in Vietnam guessing leftover from the military operations there.

We did a compression test today (4x @ 125#) and then started chasing down the low oil pressure issue.

Unfortunately, when taking it off, we ruined a perfectly good and new oil filter (NAPA 1050 with the right internal restriction), but we proved the problem was not the oil filter.

Next, we pulled the oil relief valve spring and ball. I caught Joe under the jeep; he was protecting himself from oil with a clear tub.



Nothing looked broken. The ball was slightly marred; enough to feel it with a fingernail. We cleaned it and put a washer under the spring and put it back in. We started the engine and nada... no change, no pressure.

So then we put #1 at TDC and pulled the oil pump. It looked generally ok (nothing broken), but there was some very light scoring on the end cover plate. With the cover plate off we could get a good look at the relief valve seat, and also test the relief valve with compressed air.

Joe's air blow off tool has a tapered rubber tip exactly the right size to seal the relief valve high side port. We put a squirt of oil in the port and started at about 20 psig... leak, 15 psig... leak, etc, etc down to the lowest setting Joe could get on his regulator... leak. Crap... the oil relief valve is shot.

We took a closer look at the ball and seat. The seat looked a bit strange. It had multiple seat marks... like overlapping crescent shaped impressions.

We decided to risk trying to use the ball to create a bit better seat inside the relief valve in the pump cover. We inserted the ball and then gave it a few good whacks with a flat punch and hammer. It seemed to blend some of the seat crescents a bit, but it made no difference in the air pressure test.

A quick internet search hasn't revealed any oil pressure relief valve rebuild kits or any rebuild kits for our engine model F134 oil pump (with the ball relief valve), so I guess a new pump is the only practical solution.



Has anyone ever tried to reface the oil relief valve seat?

I noticed today a strong gasoline smell in the vicinity of the gas tank, but found no evidence of a leak. Is that common? I get it that the tank has to breathe through the gas cap... but I wasn't expecting to have to smell it all the time at the driver's seat.

 

Gas smell is normal with a vented cap and so close to where you're working.

 

I've heard that the smell of gasoline is in the top ten for a majority of women... I hope my wife likes it.

I already bought a replacement oil pump, but I see Home Depot/Lowes sell a tool to reface installed water valve seats... I wonder it that might work on a Jeep's oil pressure relief valve.... hmmmm.

I talked again to Oconeeoffroad yesterday, and today they shipped me a replacement fuel gage to make up for the bad one I got from them on Monday. (Actually I learned that the gages ship directly from Omix-Ada, Atlanta?? GA). So. if you get a bad one it is likely a source issue.

The point is, Oconeeoffroad.com and Omix-Ada made good on their sale.

The third Omix-Ada fuel gage arrived yesterday... strike three... it is worse than the previous two.



This was after asking that they inspect it before shipping it. I'm curious to see how far they will go to resolve this... I'm going to keep after them until they throw in the towel... or I do.
