Lots of discussions about this. I'll get you the links.

What year is your CJ? You should fill out that information in your profile and signature line.

Edit - I saw your other thread regarding your '73.

Sorry for the hi jack but if I remove the bolts around the outer edge of my dash along with the steering shaft cover, will I have adequate access to the wiring behind the dash? I assume this is the best way in comparison to trying to get to stuff from the bottom?

Yes. Also the steering column mount. You can lay it open where you can access the speedo cluster.. The cluster is held on by 4 lil nuts.. My guess for the fuel gauge is the float in the tank has a hole in it. I soldered mine up, but have a plastic float on standby. Please use the links provided above. they are spot on, specially the second on.

Caution!!! Caution!!! Caution!!! When you have the dash unbolted from the tub DO NOT TURN THE KEY ON unless you remove the power wire from the fuel gauge. You will make MAGIC SMOKE.

I put some 6" bolts in the lower corner holes to support the dash , I could pull it out the 6" & tilt it out at the top as well- makes life a lot easier. :)

Has anyone substituted a voltage regulator IC in place of the CVR in the fuel gauge? I made this modification on my J20 using a 7805 and it much improved the stability of my gauges. It appears it would have the added advantage of not conducting if you lift the chip ground... unlike the Jeep CVR which apparently does not cycle without a ground. This sends constant battery voltage through the gauge to ground through the sender ... apparently.

I have the parts to make two of them and will get to em soon. Just rcvd my ESR meter so have some power supplies to work on first.
