you said they look too tall, but do they rub? do you run tubes in the stock rims? what gear set do you have? 5.38's?

 

No rubbing at all so in that aspect they fit perfectly. I don't think they are any taller than military NDTs but I would personally prefer a shorter tire for aesthetic reasons. My Jeep is 100% stock so whatever the factory gear ratio is...I'm not sure. No tubes, they seated fine on the factory rims and have held air for 6 years now without issue. They actually ride very well -- I can cruise 45-50 MPH down a flat stretch of highway all day long.

 

Running Goodyear Wrangler Radial P235-75R-15 , white letters IN ! Wasn't even a question , no way I wanted white on my bucket-o-bolts ! Actually even waiting for letters to dirty up a little , so I can't see 'em so much .

Finally have the jeep on the ground after being on jack-stands for the past few weeks.
Spent many hours over several days cleaning, carefully filing, grinding and sanding to remove some nicks and rim damage from prior tire install, and then finally polish the d slots (one tire had a plastic "duck-head" inside where it apparently dislodged when mounting). I had to use multiple methods and products to get them good looking without losing the original machine (lathe) marks on the surface. Ended up with 5 bfg TA KO 2's in 30x9.5 15 (black out ) tape on weights. I went with the ko over the km's mainly because I have km's on a 4x chevy truck and know how noisy and rock throwing prone they are. with the jeep intended for mainly mild offroading and desitring less noise and rock throwing decided to try these. Expensive experiment but what the heck.
I was able to reuse 4 valve stems (1 had been replaced in the past and the only causality was the shop discarded four original valve caps (kind of pisses me off as I did not notice until I started cleaning and by then they were lost forever. A few new nicks incurred to the back side where the guys had trouble getting tires mounted 20+ years ago off. All in all cleande up well and now to lay around with air pressure for the best life and drive.

My CJ came with Cooper STT's (pretty old) in 30x10.5.

I picked up some Hercules HDT 7.00x15 bias for the steel wheels that I powder coated white that I found for the CJ they are currently my rollers and look good imo (in my build thread):


I think Hercules may have discontinued the HDTs, not in their catalog anymore.

The chrome wagons with the original Cooper STTs are covered in a tarp in the back yard. The chrome has rusted and pitted in a few places from the PO's friendly dog when this was in a barn for 30yrs. Will get them dismounted at some point, then the wheels blasted and powdercoated with a crackle-type silver I think (or a hammer tone silver), but likely will run them until the tread is at 1/4 or so.

BFGs might be in my future for those replacements as Cooper only offers a 12.5" wide in a taller size - BFGs can be had in a 10.5

 

Aggressive tread! Nice looking tire for a vintage Jeep. I was looking for over 2 years for a set of the whitewall Wintermarks.

 

While we're on the subject of wheels and tires, who makes a decent reproduction of the stock 16" early cj5 wheels?

 

Some used 255/80R17 KM2 I tossed on some rims I have around for my YJ, was hoping they would fit. Needs lift and more backspace on rims. Fits the wheelhouse nice.

 

I notice the scuffing on the wheel side of tub. I have a little of that with the 30's that was run on the jeep previously. I'm curious if running that 17" tire (2" taller than 30x9.5-15) will rub sooner in situations rear axle is twisted. Wheel offset becomes important as does need for flares.

here's some pics of tire orientation.
The Renegade II rims are 8" outside to outside and 7" wide bead to bead. Offset is zero (centered). <- need to check this I previously measured it -1" offset
The Ko2's are listed as 30x 9.50 tread width is 8" and sidewall to sidewall is about 9" (with the 7" rim width that likely pulls the sidewall in just a bit.
I think these are just about perfect (save for the slight rub I may incur when the rear diff is foo center to the extreme

looks like every carries that specific rim, seems narrow, looks like its only 4 1/2 in wide inside to inside. might be the closest thing. prices are all over the place.

 

on a 4.5" rim Pizza cutters are about the only tire that can be run. 255/85R16 33.5 are over 10" wide, I would not consider them on that narrow a rim. Even a 245/75R16 is not recommended for anything less than 9". Tire selection can become an issue, one needs to start thinking 650-16. Or, look to a wheel manufacturer (stockton wheel Model 20 or 22) and select width and back-set that will yield steelies that can accomodate modern tires.
