Trying to see what the heck the PO(s) did to the front of the frame here. The winch holder and flat-towing swivel-mounts have been added - is the extra crossmember added too? What purpose would it serve? The extra crossmember is 0.125" thick plate.

I'm guessing the brackets on the bumper or for a tow bar? And the flat bar across the frame was added for extra support?

Yeah the Jeep came with a triangular tow-bar. Handy, so that's staying. You're probably right about the extra cross member.

I just noticed the two holes in the flat bar. Probably had something mounted there? Possibly a small winch?

Possibly. There are all sorts of holes all over this thing where there weren't when it rolled off the line.

I at one time did the same exact thing.

Your dash (from your teardown photos) is an OEM dash correct for a May '66 build, though it is likely not original to your Tux as it appears the color is Glacial White, while your Jeep was either red or gold originally. The gauge thickness is closer to 18ga, though the lower edge is heavier to stiffen up the dash. The replacement you linked from Walcks should be what you are looking for. Since you Tux is a V6 model, one of the upper holes adjacent to the speedo would have a plug in the hole where the choke cable was used on the 4cyl version. The very late '66-up dash had a different hole configuration with the ignition in a different location, and more smaller holes left of the column.

    Access to the battery's posts.

And, if on a CJ (civilian jeep) it is a spot-welded non-opening cover--a hold-over from a military configuration/battery placement where it was a functioning access cover. Others who know better than I will chime and set me straight if in error, I hope.

You're correct but those batteries need to be secured.

It may just be the weld on cover. A faux cover with no battery box. It was used to cover the stamped opening...

Everyone seems to be correct.Battery box cover or just a cover for left over hole. Just in case someone is curious this is a left over from the M38a1 that had a 24 volt system. mike
