Flanged Axle Question

Is the bearing and bearing retainer that is pressed onto the axle shaft all that keeps the flanged axle in?

On my axle I slide the bolt plate on, press on the bearing, press on the bearing keeper and insert axle and bolt the plate to the tube. Is that it? What if the bearing retainer and bearing slip off?

the tire ,rim and axle pass you and leave you to walk or get a ride... if the bearing is greased and in good shape they stay together fine. if say you leave the inner seal out and expect the 90 wt to lube the bearing not so much...btdt

The press fit of the locking ring does the holding. The retainer keeps the whole package together.

It's a good setup, and way better than an internal c clip axle.

Just about every axle built over the last 6 or so decades have been that way..........millions still on the road.

Once you press on the retaining collar you'll feel better about it.

And if you ever have that retainer fail, you'll feel worse about it! BTDT

Toyota rates some of their trucks to tow 12,000 now on the same design. I generally don't tow anything without a rear full floating axle.
