RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

I don't believe the spider gears, 19 vs 30 are interchangeable in the carrier.

I concur. I ran into this when I converted with a warn kit 20 years ago. I ended up changing the carrier at that time as well as installing a minispool so spider gear were not an issue for me. IIRC the 19 spline axles were slightly smaller diameter than the 30 spline axles that came with the kit and I couldn't get the warn axles into the carrier to even try to use the spool with the stock carrier.

    That is so awesome!

If this is for a standard D44 housing, this is a pretty good deal. The 30 spline uses different sized bearings than the 19 spline. if you're going to go through all this effort, buy a 30 spline Power lock, ox locker or ARB.

Also the kit says it requires 30 spline case/carrier.

  5. i believe you will need a roxor axle, as they are a different track than jeep. i may be wrong, but i believe i remember this being discussed.

53.5 is the approximate width of the roxor d44. NT d44 axles are about 53. The 30 spline case will drop into the roxor carrier housing to replace the roxor offset as stated on the kit... But it seems you can buy this kit to mitigate this issue Roxor Ring Gear Spacer

All the rest of the parts for this kit will probably bolt on. The d30 spindles will need to be bored and machined to fit, but i see there is some sort of spacer.. This may be an adapter fit the D30 spindles to the axle tube. This would make he axle shafts a bit longer, but if the splines are cut long enough, an axle grinder would make them work.

No, the side gears will not interchange between cases. 19 and 10 spline can and 27 and 30 spline can. They will interchange between cases in a Powerlock.

Todd, this looks like the setup that is on that m38 axle I got from you. But I'm sure that is way older than what is showing there in that kit

man $1150 plus you have to buy a carrier and gear set...are the roxors disc in the rear?

  10. you could just get spool

If you are going to use a Jeep for anything other than trail use, spools suck. They increase wear on every part, most especially tires and handling suffers. They much prefer to just go straight no matter where the steering wheel is positioned. I don't even really like them on-trail. I only lock my axles when actually necessary and at that point, lockers are a very valuable asset.

I'm not sure what brand that it and yes I think it is a very old set-up likely early 80's? When I first picked this up I posted the question as to what it was and nickmil posted some potential info. that had to be at least 10 years ago. That axle has a locker in it btw but I think we talked about that that day

  13. and if you can't afford a locker?

Weld it, spool, lsd, or save up. Cutting brakes are an option.

Save your money until you can. I ran open for many, many years until I could upgrade. Learning to pick your lines and obstacles is invaluable later on.

A spool was made for one thing only putting the horse power straight to the wheels and going in a straight line as in the 1/4 mile. They are not good alternatives to a true locker or lsd.not for use on a street driven vehicle although some do.

Learn how to drive well with an open diff. Will you get stuck?.....yes. Will you end up on the wrong end of a strap or winch?......yes. But you will learn the limits of your jeep, about tire placement and traction. There is a time and place for lockers/spools and lsd's, once you've honed your skills and are looking for something more challenging.

I agree with the second part of this statement but not with the first. Very common to run a spool in track racing on loose surfaces. Sand, mud, mixed loose surfaces a spool can be invaluable as it is a predictable way to controlled sliding around corners similar to what drift drivers do nowadays. Other wise yes, for a trail and street driven vehicle they most certainly are not the best choice. In fact they suck.

I thought the CJ NT D44 was around 50" or so wms to wms? If that's the case the roxor axle is 3" wider.

Absolutely!!! If I were on a tight budget, I would do what I did when I was on a tight budget. Left the front open and put a Powr-Lok in the rear. You can usually find a used, serviceable 19 spline Powr-Lok for about $200. Not as good as being completely locked but a big improvement over running open. That said, and as Nick indicates, you can do a lot of wheeling with both ends open, the caveat being a winch comes in play significantly more often. A winch has always been my first added accessory to any Jeep.

My measurement was 49 13/16" for the stock NT early CJ axle housing with Dana 30 full float disc brake hubs. That is 1/8" longer than the stock D25/D27 front axle.
