There are definitely different distributors/ caps. I had this issue earlier this year. After using the wrong cap for a couple years mine fits great now.
What Distributor Do I Even Have?

Mine is the 1110376 distributor. I can't find a number on the cap, but it must be 1967286 since it fits properly.

Can you get us the P/N on the distributor body?

So my distributor has no numbers on it at all. It does have a ink stamp for a remanuf but that is it. Could this be the whole problem?

I do remember referencing your post Scott, I just lost it in the shuffle but this is great info. The Rockauto distributor is a send/return core for rebuilding so that wont help my situation. I do recall on another post one of the ECJ members posted that they have a pile of old distributors since they HEI everything they do, maybe I cold pick up a good core that way?

Maybe its just me but I think it would be a great resource to compile this info all in one place. I'm not the best at it, and definitely don't have all the knowledge but might try if some of you vets think it would be worthwhile ?

If you go to rock auto you can look up a 63 Buick special with a 198 3.2 Liter Buick v6. This engine is odd fire and uses a different distributor base/cap than the Jeep 225 odd fire engine.

    OEM part numbers for 198 caps are: 12338677, 19106944, 1957693, D318, DH3220
OEM part numbers for distributor bodies are 1110322 and 1110342 These work with the above cap numbers.

OEM part numbers for 225 caps are 1967286, DR982
OEM part numbers for distributor body is 1110376

You need to make sure that your body is matched to the correct cap.

Personally I would PM Daryl and see if he has a complete distributor and cap ect.... that he will sell you. Once you verify that the engine will run then install a Pertronix 1165 kit in it and never look back at those points again.

Thanks much Norcal, great info and probably the exact source of my problem. I do want to go with Pertronix when its all in and good. Did I read somewhere that the Pertronix only works with Delcos? Who is Daryl? I don't remember exactly what thread it was I saw.
Thanks 1928, I'll get back to you-

I had the exact same problem with my 198 when I got it. Fuel port on one side of carb was plugged with dirt. If you have compression you are missing either spark or fuel. You can verify which by removing a plug then rehook the wire and watch for the spark while cranking. If you have spark replace the plug, start the engine and squirt gasoline out of a pump squirt bottle or a little shot of ether into the even bank

I remember seeing your post in researching for solutions. I did try pouring some fuel into the carb on that side with no noticeable improvement. I plan to rebuild the carb anyway but am not sure this is the source of my problems. I'll update after the rebuild in case I'm surprised by the results. Thanks-

Ernie, you said you have the points breaking. Have you pulled a plug and visually seen the spark at the plug?

Not the plugs themselves but each of the three wires in question (1,3,5) as the engine is running and all have spark. I can have any or all of them disconnected and there is no noticeable miss /drop in RPM, unlike the other side.

Which bank is running even or odd?

I have a ‘70 cj5 with dauntless and Prestolite distributor running points.

Mine was doing that same thing - same bank (1,3,5). I could pull all three plug wires off at the same time and couldn’t tell very much difference in idle.

I pulled the dist and followed the directions on this site to re install it and made sure the rotor would point to #1 post on the dist cap just like the service manual pictured.

After doing that, the engine ran great.

Have you thought of going with HEI it was the best thing I ever did for my 1968 225 It starts on the first bump compared to have a long crank. Also, cold driveability is better.

Sorry Willys43 I screwed you up. It is the even bank, 2,4,6 that is not firing. I did try and manually feed the even bank with fuel but it didn't seem to help. I have sense received a carb rebuild kit so it is going to get that done this week, maybe I'll be surprised. CJ5Dale, Yes I saw your earlier post and was hopeful that mine too was just installed out of sequence, that seemed most obvious. I have tried multiple reinstalls of the distributor with no luck. Taking time to identify the firing position of the rotor it is not ,IMO, able to fire to 2,4 & 6. Now that fact that there is no numbers on the distributor itself, and the cap is not consistent with a new oddfire cap makes me suspect the distributor itself. I am hopeful to hear back form Daryl soon.
I did consider HEI but would rather just run a Delco with a Pertronix kit in it. I have been running one of these units in a 74 VW Thing for almost 20 years with great results.

Ernie, if you have future plans to add efi installing an hei would be benefitial. Efi requires a digital tach signal that you cant get with analog distribtors. Simply modify an hei distributor( which I have a manual for)(peice of cake) and you have the signal that the computor is looking for, or you can install a crank trigger like Norcal did if you really like the pertronix. Does the pertronix use the ballast resistor?

Here is a thought, if you are using the wrong post on the distributor for #1 (incorrect primary timing). then the next time it fire on 150 instead of 75 or vice versa. You might try moving plug wires one position on the cap say clockwise, then rotate distributor body one position counter clockwise. I think this will change the firing sequence from 75 to 150 or vice versa. Maybe a better explaination is you are actually firing 1,3,5 off of 2,4,6 distributor cap position which would cause the 2,4,6 sparks to off, if that makes any sense. Ok I got the book out. There is a strong chance you primary sequence timing is off. Instead of firing Fire, fire, pause fire , fire, pause. You are probably firing. fire, pause , fire, fire pause, fire. This will run on three cylinders

So Timgr suggested this a couple of weeks back and I gave it a shot with no luck. Shifted wires clockwise rotated distributor counter, wouldn't run.

Ok sorry about the huge sketch but correct me if I am wrong.
    I have #1 firing , pause, #6 fire, #5 fire, pause, #4 fire ,#3 fire, pause, #2 fire

That sounds right! When you tried tims change did you move the wires 1 position and rotate the body to line up the rotor to the new number 1 tower! That should have run with at least 1,3,5.
