What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

What a mess. I couldn't really tell last night but my cheap hf airless sprayer has a very wide spray pattern and it will cover everything in front of the nozzle. So much overspray to clean off.... I'll finish up with spray paint.

 

Drove the Jeep down to the lake this afternoon. Good to get the cob webs burnt out.

I use a cheap electrostatic setup ($200 IIRC) for coating anything metal. You don’t need the expensive paint if you have access to old school oil paint. Minimal masking and minimal overspray.

After over 15 years of attempting to restore a 1955 M38A1, I bought this one from a friend who restored it. This is going to be a tribute to my father's Jeep in DaNang 1968 when he was CO of 1st Hospital Company. He is in my Avitar. Got the decals made and I have to make the spare tire sign and the front plate for it.

It's been almost a year since I started on this basket case CJ5. The last body parts went on today, the Windshield and hood and the front end body parts are all adjusted. 1956 CJ5 with Cj7 hood, front fenders and grille with 93" wheel base.

It sure doesn't happen with me pre-retirement and with a hundred non-Jeep projects that also need to get done.

 

My problem is at 70 years old, I'm only good for about 4 solid hours a day, and then I need to take the next day off to recover.

 

I have that problem in my 50s!

 

x2, I feel your pain. At my age it takes twice as long to recover as it did to do the job. I just don't know about this retirement thing, it's just not what I was expecting..

 

I am loving this retirement thing, my only problem is I am having trouble keeping up with what day it is. Most days seem like Saturday, but I thought it was Friday yesterday and drove into town to the post office only to find it had closed at 01:00.

Takes me three times as long to do anything nowadays compared to the days when I still had good knees and flexible hands.

I spent most of the day installing a new water pump and alternator on my CJ5, and quit before I put the radiator back in which is only 4 bolts and two clamps. So, a two hour job took me most of the day and still not finished.

But, she is starting to look good. Haven't done any work on the body yet, but I love the wheels and tires I got at the Willys Reunion in Fulton.

 

Agree with all of this and at 74 I'm having a hard time coming to grips with the idea I don't have to save every old Jeep I come across .......naps are a problem with productivity lol

 

On the CJ5 changed the oil, coolant and power steering fluid. Did the oil and tire rotation on the wife's van.

 

Since I have it out anyway decided to take the radiator to a shop today and have it cleaned out so everything in the cooling system will be in good shape. While I wait on that I plan to replace valve and rocker cover gaskets and adjust the valves.

When I first got it it had sat under trees in the back lot of a 4X4 shop for a year and a half and was covered with green algae.

I scrubbed it with Comet and it looks a lot better, but the paint is in pretty bad shape, not really enough there to buff it out good.

My friend in the auto paint business mixed some paint samples to match the original paint code. He says the paint is the best out there, and will hold up even to fuel spills which anyone who has filled the tank too much in a Jeep would appreciate. It ought to be good at $400 a gallon.

I am going to just enjoy driving the the Jeep over the Winter, and see if anything else mechanical needs attention. We plan to paint it in the Spring, but he already has the new bumper and I will be taking him the windshield frame and other parts I want painted black in a week or two.

 

My least favorite day of the year...putting the top back on for winter
Also washed out the interior, scrubbed the tires and gave it a coat of wax.

 

Got this far on the timing chain replacement.
Didn’t feel like laying in the wet driveway to drain the oil…
