When did the rear side markers show up?

Does anyone know when the rear side markers showed up? I have a '70 built about Sept. '69, and it doesn't have any side markers. It does have the holes in the hood for the hood mounted reflectors though. Did they come in mid year '70?

Front what I have read, the hood mounted reflectors appeared in '69 and lasted into the '70 model year. My '69 has both, the rear side markers and hood mounted reflectors. KCJ

I noticed your avatar a few days back, made me look twice. Me likey yours too.

I suspect my CJ is a Renegade I as it seems to have most all the Renegade equipment, including the swing away rear tire carrier. I wonder if that would have made a difference as to if they used tubs with or without side markers (no spare tire mount on the passenger side to mount the marker in). That brings up another question, did they put a passenger side marker on Renegade I's, and was it a rectangular one?

Roman (1970 model year) has hood reflectors, no rear markers and no front fender notches.

GreenCJ5 - would you mind checking to see if my VIN (8305017361782) is higher or lower than the one you have on Roman? TIA

I did a little research of the DOT requirements and found the follows:

"Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 regulates the lamps, reflectors and associated equipment for cars, trucks, trailers, buses, multi-purpose passenger vehicles and motorcycles. It became effective on January 1, 1968, for vehicles wider than 80 inches (large trucks and buses) and on January 1, 1969, for the other vehicles."

I assume from the above that Jeeps manufacutured on or after 01/01/69
    were required as OE.

    Zoomer,

My VIN # is 8305017 362352 and the sticker says it was manufactured in October of 1969. Pink slip states the model year as 1970. Here's a pic of the window sticker. Hope it helps.

    greencj5,

How cool is that to have the original window sticker! Have you owned your CJ since it was new? I take it that the body has never been replaced?

Intersting that KCJeep's Aug '69 build has them, but my (probable) Sept '69 and your Oct '69 build don't. Andy's Dec. '69 build does. If it wasn't for KCJeep's, I'd think the rear markers started in about Nov. '69.

    Zoomer,
I am the second owner. The first owner was a machinist and his attention to detail is probably why I have pages of records 'bout Roman starting with the original sales brochures about the Universal and the special equipment you could get on them. I found them to be one of the best things about getting my hands on this Jeep. There is no mention of any accidents in the journal although the rear corners are a little damaged and covered with plating. There aren't any wires, clipped or otherwise, that could have fed any marker lights at any of the corners of this Jeep.

Tinker, when you say your Jeep has reflectors, do you mean both front and rear or only front? I think they added the hood mounted reflectors first, and then later added the rear. I'm not sure if the rears were actually marker lights or simply reflectors at first.

Curt, do you think there is any way you could send me some scans of your '70 model brochures? It sure be fun to look them over.

    Thanks for the info guys.

My 1966 has wires going to the hood mounted reflectors…think someone added the light component or did any of that vintage come with lights in lieu of just reflectors?

    thanks much…

I don't believe a 1966 left the factory with any side markers--reflector type or bulb.
