Rear Disk Brake/parking Brake

I finally got tired of my transfer case parking brake not working. I replaced the rear 11” drum brakes with Cadillac rear disks with parking brake, the brakes work great.
The problem:
I used the original t-handle parking brake. When I go to set the parking brakes I can’t get enough leverage to set the brakes. If I disconnect the cable from the brakes the cable and handle move with no issues. Is it possible that with the pull handle I’m not getting enough leverage to operate the parking brakes. Maybe I need to go to a foot operated type lever. What’s you opinion.

 

You can make a lever to apply more mechanical advantage in the cable. Handle further from fulcrum than the wheel cables.

 

Stand on the service brake with your foot, and *then* set the parking brake with the T-handle. That's generally been how I've handled it, and it's always worked, as long as the Parking Brake hardware and cabling was in serviceable condition.

 

Does the Cadillac parking brake use the same puck as the service brakes? Has to be for the stomp-and-pull strategy to work.

 

This is true, I hadn't considered that.

 

That was my thought also that I needed some sort of leverage.

I hadn’t thought of this, I’ll try that tomorrow when I’m home.

It does use the same puck.

Finally got time to play with JEEP today. Tried stepping on brakes while setting the parking brake, still was unable to get to set.
Now I’m playing with a couple ideas on incorporating some sort of arm for leverage.

 

I used a YJ foot parking brake assembly and straight to the splitter then back to the drums. Didn’t need the extra leverage. It was quite a mix of parts to get it done.

I did this same thing with the 11” drums I have on the rear. I’ve been happy with it.

As discussed here in the past, the military M38A1 brake lever, between the seats, may be worth a look. I like it a lot better than the civilian "cane" handle. It may be the same part as the FC jeeps.

 

I used a forklift park brake handle mounted between the seats for my drum brakes. It might not be enough leverage for your discs $60 on Ebay

 

My M422A1 Mighty Mite came with that lever, mounted vertically though. Love it. My CJ6 will have one too.

 

Years ago we would use two floor levers to work the rear E-brakes independently, which comes in very handy when one wheel loses traction.

 

This is an example of an Orschein brake lever. Its used for many industrial applications, as well as it came on late Willys Jeeps. I have a 1960 Wagon with one, as well as my ‘62 (or is it ‘64?) FC150, both original equipment.

I think the ones I used came off of old VWs.

 

I have been looking at the floor mounted levers. I don’t know if they will provide the leverage that I need. I am also looking at foot peddle style from a CJ7, I think that might provide the leverage I need. Sitting on a beach in Maui thinking on this with beverage in hand right now, will be a minute until I get back to it.
