Am I correct in assuming that these distributors and parts for them are pretty much non existent?
Just need a vacuum advance unit and have had zero luck finding one.

They aren't the easiest things to find parts for, no. I highly suggest switching to a delco or HEI.

My local oreilly had tune up parts in stock for the prestolite.

    This.
The Delco runs standard GM points and condenser. Vac advances are available as well. You can also upgrade to a Petronix unit.
The HEI is an excellent upgrade that eliminates the need to reset the dwell and timing every time you do a tune up.

The cost for the rebuild is almost as much as a rebuilt Delco distributor, which I guess is the route I'll go.
I wasn't even able to find that until I searched for a 1966 instead of 1970.

Stock HEI's (as well as a number of aftermarket units) are still available over the counter at your FLAPS (76 Buick 231). They take a bit of massaging to install but use a single wire and are considered the an excellent upgrade.
I plucked a used unit out of a U pick yard in the 90's and it still works great.

Unless you are doing a 100% restoration. or have a sentimental attachment to keeping your Jeep all original, I'd go for either an HEI or Pertronix conversion. I have no experience with Pertronix, but I do with HEI, virtually bulletproof with US made parts, set'em and forget,em, and parts are available anywhere! Good luck!

Ya, I've pretty much abandoned the idea if sticking with the points ignition.
Now I'm looking into the different options for HEI

The vacuum unit on my Prestolite distributor on my '71 CJ-6 is bad, as well. A local mechanic is going to give it a good "general timing" for now, and I'll probably look into HEI down the road, as well. I was trying to avoid electronic anything on this vehicle, but...

I just scored a rebuilt Prestolite on Rock Auto.
Coming from Canada $105 plus tax and shipping.

I had clicked on "notify me when available "
Some time ago and got an email yesterday.
I bought either the only one or the last one.
    It's a $75 core charge so that's not a part I'll be sitting on.
If the one they send me is decent I'll send in the core and another one will be out there.
