19 Spline Locker Options

    I have just about given up my search for a flanged Dana 44 and have heard bad things lately about Herm's so that cancels any hope of finding a full floater kit. I don't want to mess with building my own FF so I have decided to just go through my original tapered axle 44 (19 spline) and add a traction device. I don't want a lunchbox locker, I have had them in the past and hate the way they act on pavement. What other options do I have? Limited slip is ok and selectable is too much $$ for my budget.

    The only 19spline non-lunchbox is gonna be a powerlock...

    Are new Powerlocks still sold or would I need to find a used one and rebuild it ? I have searched but only came up with used ones.

    If you rule out automatic/lunchobox lockers, and rule out selectable lockers, that pretty much leaves only limited slips and permanently locked spools.....Powerloc is the classic limited slip for that axle. In terms of not wanting a 'lunchbox' locker, is a Detroit automatic locker that comes with the entire case ok? (I think the official description of 'luncbox' locker is one where you use the existing case and swap in a few parts. Detroit makes a complete auto locker with case and all if that is any better - still has the same 'auto' locking features and detractors of a lunchbox.

    I like the Detroit but all of the venders I have checked list it as discontinued.

    It will still have the 'quirky' road manners of any automatic - same as a lunchbox.....Could give Sexton a call - they are out of Utah. I just ordered a powertrax unit through them.

    R&P sells a full float kit. I dont know if he has a 19 spline kit but upgrading to 30 spline would be worth it just for the better locker choices. I just took out a 30 slpine Detroit limited slip and replaced both diffs with arb air lockers.

    I think you should reconsider doing the FF. Then you can have Moser make any axle you want, get any locker or LS you want, possibly have lockouts for towing if you want, or not, and not depend on the tapered axles. Just my opinion. And you are wise to steer clear of Herm.

    I ordered the Auburn Locker for $125. Think I'll stick it in my old housing and run it until I can decide what I really want to do.
    Whataboutal has a great deal on a flanged 44 with a locker but right now I am too busy to make the 5 or six hour round trip.

    I agree. I did the Warn FF years ago when it was available and upgraded to 30 spline at the same time. The R&P kit looks great or building your own kit is a really good option too. Going FF is a great option over running the tapered shafts if your budget and time allows.

    Rich (the R in the R&P) has started the company up under a modified name after his business partner and him shuttered the original R&P 4wd. Its now R&P Early Jeeps - no website, just direct communication.
