    Drove to work.

Engine was getting hot. Up to 130* at one point. Fans definitely working so I’m going to pull the thermostat and see what happens.

Hope you mean 230... 130 is pretty cool and the thermostat shouldn't have even opened by then.

    Yes 230 *:(
I ran engine this evening with a water hose feeding the cooling system. It was coming out dirty for a while but after 10min was running clear. Drove a bit but no difference. Then removed the thermostat but that didn’t help either. The radiator and fan setup was well tested for the past couple years with the 231 so I’m reasonably sure that’s not the problem. I’m going to try adjusting the timing tomorrow and see if that will help.

Do you have an infrared thermometer to double check you temp gauge? I would try this to confirm before you go hunting down something that might not be an issue.

I have 2 temp gauges, regular gauge and Holley Sniper. Both reading hot.

Is your engine running lean? Maybe the distributor got bumped?

Hopefully the Holley Sniper is running the air/fuel correctly.
I’ve gone up and down the timing and haven’t seen any difference.

I think it’s just dirty clogged coolant passages. I’ve flushed it with water several times but it still comes out dirty (no oil just muddy). The temps do seem to be getting a little better (but it was cool today). I bought some cooling system cleaner today and I’ll run that for several hours and see what happens.

Seems like your fan shroud leaves allot to be desired.
99% of the time heating issues are fan shroud related.

I’ve been running this two speed fan for a couple years now. 17” reaches nearly edge to edge. Rubber gasket against radiator seals it up well.

I haven’t pulled them yet but Holley says it’s running rich - AFR mostly around 12.5

That should tend to make it run cooler. Lean AFR will tend to run hot.

Been in Colorado for the past week. Engine sat with cleaner inside after several warm-ups. Hopefully good results. We’ll have updates tomorrow.

Scott what is going on with your over heating problem? Did you fing the cause?

The engine must have sat for years with some coolant/water inside. I’ve used several different commercial cooling system cleaners and still getting very dirty water when I flush. I found a cleaner by Evap-o-rust that seems to work better. I have a second round running through now. It’s getting better. I think I’m going to put the thermostat and some coolant back in after the next flush.

I've had some success with this product. It's not a liquid but very small flakes that dissolve. Your results may vary, but I ran (1/2 of the bottle) this through a badly scaled original 2 core 57 Modine radiator which still is in use today in my 54. I have an extremely scaled 52 M38A1 radiator that I plan to use the rest of the bottle with in the hopefully near future.

How do you think it does for engine internals ? My Radiator is fairly new, Aluminum and in good shape. The problem is rust inside the engine I’m afraid.

I think that's where this excels....with built up rust and what not. I'm a bit dubious on the claims of cutting accumulated oil IMHO. Why not put in a beater radiator and do the deed? Nothing to loose. You have quite a buffer between your water jacket and important things like your piston sleeves. If I were using an old crappy radiator in stead of your new aluminum one, I'd cycle it for at least double the time they suggest. So what if it leaks.
