Finding parts for the old Wagner brakes is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. The adjusters don't work very well anyway, but they are easy to adjust with a brake spoon. Good luck.

    Is it 100% needed?

Not if you choose to manually adjust the brakes, which is no big deal and certainly a lot easier than the old style brakes with eccentrics for adjustment.

Back in the day it was fairly common to ditch the "self adjuster" parts, which didn't work well anyway, and just use the spreader screw to adjust the brakes on these Wagner brakes manually when needed.

You could consider an upgrade to Bendix 11" brakes, parts are much more readily available.

Great to know! I thought it was essential to keep the star adjuster in a locked position. Thank you Oldpappy.

If worried about that you could leave the spring paw in place, but in isn't really needed, and those are almost always broken or missing anyway.

I gave up on trying to rebuild the Wagner brakes because those parts are next to impossible to find. Were it mine I would upgrade to the better Bendix 11", the only thing hard to find for that are the backing plates, and I have a bunch of those if you decide to go that route.

This is one of those I may have one available in a bit. I am working on swapping out the OEM 10" brakes that would have the piece you need. It may be a month or two, and as they are a complete working set, I'd be looking to sell it all.
