Just put on a nice WO rebuilt carb on my L head motor. The motor runs so rich that it belches out black smoke. What can I do to lean it up.

Any adjustments etc other than the idle screw?

runs like the choke is pulled out but it is not.

Any ideas would be helpful indeed. Doug

LOL! I was just working on a talk for the Fall Willys Reunion this weekend last nite. The topic is carburetors...

You've checked the choke plate, it's not closing? I mean, the cable is adjusted properly so that the choke plate is open all the way when the choke knob is pushed in?

Is it only doing this at idle?

Have you even set the idle mixture yet? Usually the mixture screws won't make it run THAT rich. A restriction in the air flow somewhere (like the choke) usually is the cause.

...or the float is set incorrectly so the carb keeps continuously dumping fuel. I would be in touch with the folks who did the rebuild ASAP, or if you did it yourself, go back in there and check the float setting with the little cardboard gauge that came in the kit.

Wondered about the float too. Thought I included that.

    Thanks Steve.

It is belching out black smoke while driving. We will double check the float level. Choke flap open.

If the rebuild kit cam from the FLAPS, it probably has the wrong needle and seat combination in it. The Carter carbs were used in a LOT of different applciations, and the little Willys 4s need a smaller needle/seat combo than what comes in the off-the-shelf kits.

What should the float be set at on the WO carb. I will check that first.

Factory Service Manual is your best bet. :)

I don't know what it would be as off the top of my head I can't tell you which model of carb you have.

I'm sure the resources are on the web, you could find it with the proper information.

I found everything I need in a 1945 dated service manual I had in my shop. It tells every detail, orfice sizes, float level, etc etc. It even shows some vent holes that need to be clear in order to keep from running rich. Thanks, Doug
