Is This An Acme Hard Top - HELP FAST

    This hardtop is $750 and located about 5 hours, one way, from my home. My CJ is at the mechanic and I can not go outside and look at shape. Based on these PICs, is this an Acme Hard Top that will fit a 73 CJ5? I can have it, but I gotta go get it tomorrow if I want it. Please help. Thanks.

    yes cj7s have square doors opening and cj5s have rounded door openings.

    Also compare the doors. Note the lower window, which I believe is a tell-tale ACME sign.

    If you are getting that for almost nothing, I would get on the road as fast as humanly possible. Those things are hard to find.

    EDIT - That's a '79 in the pics.

    Yes, but the windshield frame is the issue here. ;)

    I'm with Jim. Even if it's 76+ take it and resell it.

    Are you saying you can buy it for $750? I figured that is what you meant, but it seems everyone else is interpreting it as you are getting it for free/next to nothing. . .

    x2 on the windshield issue btw.

    Yes. It will cost me $750 plus a 10 hour drive.

    Too bad you can't measure your Jeep before you go. You need to pay attention to the overall length and the width across the windshield. The overall length will determine that it's a CJ-5 top (in case it's a CJ-7 top with CJ-5 doors - yes, unlikely). The width across the top of the windshield will determine if its for '75 or older, or '76 and newer. After '76, the windshield tilts back more and the uprights tilt in, making the top of the windshiled narrower than the bottom. If you measure the straight-ish part across the top of your windshield and it's the same as this top, then the top has to fit pre-76 CJ-5s.

    Maybe someone could get that measurement for you, though I'd trust my own measurements more.

    I seem to recall that the across-the-top measurement of the windshield for CJ5s '75 and earlier was 59 inches, and 55 inches for 76 and newer...
    but I can't find that in writing right now. :rofl: One of the catalogs used to have a diagram that showed this...

    Call the guy and have him measure the space where the top of the windshield fits. 59" or just slightly over that and you're good up to '75. Just over 55", but less than 59": It's for a '76/up.
    Call the owner and have him measure before you drive...

    Seems like a bunch of money and a long road trip to go to all that trouble and have the wrong one. Worse case scenario you have to buy a +'76 windshield frame to make it work.

    Although mine's steel the angle should be the same, or at least very close. I put a straight edge on the vertical plane of my door and at the top measured the distance between it and the door edge. I got 5 and 3/8". Assuming the doors ought to be somewhat similar in height, if the owner could measure like that maybe it'll give you a better idea. I also measured 2" above the top of the door and it was 5 and 3/4". That imaginary height put the top of the door at the top edge of the windshield, I'd assume those doors aren't that tall.

    That looks exactly like the Acme hardtop and doors that my dad has on his '79 CJ5. I'd say that top is for the '76+ CJs. The driverside rear of the hardtop (beside the liftgate) should have a logo on it. If the letters haven't been sanded away or if it doesn't have too many coats of paint on it, the ACME logo should show up. It's kind of a raised logo. If I recall corectly it's a triangle shape with the ACME words written accross it. The whole logo is maybe 5" wide and 3" high.

    Yes, that's in line for an Acme, if it's from a '64 I have doubts that it's like your '76+ top and doors, 97XJ_95YJ. ;)
