Funny thing I noticed is they have the glove box door labeled as the starter switch. Someone didn't proof read too well. This is from an original FSM. You'll notice there just isn't much on the dash.

This is a '55 dash , apart from a different speedo & the floor starter yours should be exactly the same.

  6. #6 seems to be pointing down to a switch on the floor. Did the early CJ's have a floor mounted starter switch??

Yes, real Jeeps you start with your foot:hurrican::). It's funny when you ask someone to move your rig and they'll say " your battery is dead! It won't start!" while twisting the key back and forth.

    Yup. That's why #6 says "starter switch";):D

    Hmmmmm, maybe when I said-

"This is a '55 dash , apart from a different speedo & the floor starter yours should be exactly the same."

I could have been a little clearer, a bit more specific, perhaps more concise.

    But I wasn't :(

    I'm sorry.

Anybody know what year they changed from the floor starter to the key starter in the CJ5s? (Just one of those little things I've always wondered.)

'57-58 time frame, probably when they started offering 12V as an option.
Note- The floor starter on 5's & 3B's is an electrical switch, shouldn't be confused with the 2A (3A?) setup that had the mechanical linkage to activate a switch mounted on the starter itself & to push the starter gear into mesh with the ring gear.

I like the floor starter, My 62 has the starter switch on the key. My dads 50 3A had a floor starter. Does anyone know what year they went away from the floor starter? Was it a plunger through the firewall to the starter or was it just an electrical switch?:coffee:

One more question. In Howards picture there looks like a round bump just to the right of the gas pedal ahead of the main shifter. Is this some sort of footrest?

Yes, but that pic appears to be of one of the pre-production units, for example theres a cover plate on the passenger side kick board. The foot rest & cover plate were "leftovers" from the M38A1, they never made it into production on the 5, or at least for longer than the first few units. Interestingly enough, the captive nut where the footrest would have screwed in is larger 3/8" vs. 5/16" than the other tranny hump nuts on at least the early production 5's, Tonk has it as well as some others I know of.

a 69 will not have the yellow and black vin sticker at the lower left. all else on dash will be as stock from factory.

Thanks!, so its the windshield wiper motor switch, then ?, then the hazard flashers, then the lights?
What did they use to run the wiper wire in from the windshield to the dash?
    Thanks again, great pic!

from right to left; choke, blank, flasher, wiper, head lights.

the wiper wires come out of the dash above the light switch and into the windshield frame.
