Does anyone have the part number for a new Oil Dip Stick tube for my 74 CJ5 w/258? Will any 258 dip stick work?

All I can seem to pull up from the usual sources is the dip stick tube for the v8's.

No...I'm not gonna switch to a V-8 for a dip stick tube. ;)

    Anyone? Please?

    Awesome. Thanks.

No boneyards around here with anything other than a couple cherokee's in them. (It's a small town).

I appreciate the help a TON. Once I get the YJ on the road...it'll be time to work on the Valdez a lot more.

Isn't that the same six-cylinder that is in the Gremlin?:?

    Thought just struck.
Can you use one of the universal ones from your local FAPS?

FAPS? I assume that acronym is for: blank-Auto-Parts-Store. I hope the first word isn't Foreign - we don't have one of those. And because I'm not sure about the acronym, I have no idea if it will fit or not. Another alternative possibly! Please fill my uneducated self in. :D

Dealership was no help. Part number discontinued. However Crown automotive has the part number, but no description except "tube". I'm about to call them.

    THANX!!

the part number given is for the tube only, 1974-1980, maybe a couple more years as well.

    Doesn't matter.

Apparently I don't spend enough time with the old girl and too much time with the new one. I also have a 1990 YJ that I'm working on. But I'm getting off subject...

The '74 has a 1985 motor in it. At least that is what the guy on the phone told me. Block casting# is: 511C20 I'm going to go research how to break those numbers down in a second, but get this...

The guy also gave me the part number to replace the dipstick on that year 258 as 3242449. The dealership wants $176.99!!!!!! Its a 2 foot piece of tube!!! I could probably MAKE the damn thing out of 3/8" Brake line and some JB weld! HOLY CARP!

IIRC the "C" means 258 2V, so it has to be a 1977 or later engine, since the 258 2V began in 1977 in the FSJs. I don't think the "5" means 1985 though... "5" was used for 1972, but at some point it wraps around. Could be a rebuilt engine with a later block and your original accessories. A complete '85 engine would have an aluminum intake and a plastic valve cover. If you have a stamped steel valve cover, the head is the early (pre-81) type.

That part number has to be wrong

3242449 is for 1983 and later, the real long tube and stick.
and that number is for the tube only.

looks like the short tube number I gave you previously was used until 1982 FYI.

There are several AMC clubs- I'd google your engine or AMC clubs and ask...

Comes out to be a 1985 engine. The part is $176 from the dealership. I ended up braising it and it turned out perty good! It'll last until I save about $10 a month for the next 18 months to get a new one. But in the mean time...something else will let go.
