Distributor question

    Can anyone tell me if there were different types of distributors used on the Willys flat head motors?

    Problem > I have a new dizzy cap which a UK Jeep parts supplier assures me is the right and only one used on the flatheads but, my old one is smaller in diameter. The measurement from inside the caps from opposite plug contacts is 1/4'' different, old one is 2'' & new one 2 1/4''.
    The rotor arm in my old dizzy has the sprung contact built onto the arm and a fixed contact on the cap whereas the new cap has the sprung loaded contact built into the cap.

    I often wonder if this Jeep of mine was built from junkyard parts as nothing much on it seems the same as other guys Jeeps:?

    yes
    even more so now as parts get swapped around the engines
    any number on your distributor ?

    Jim, I cant see any numbers, it does have a small short pipe with a flip cap (some kind of oiler maybe?) tube facing down, this pipe exits from the dizzy right near the base about 3/8'' from the engine block on the coil to contact breaker wire inlet side of the dizzy.
    Maybe they all have this, it cetainly looks to be an early type distributor to me, even looks very similar in shape to the new one I bought.
    Silly question maybe (im no expert) but, do you think it could it be from a OHV 3B engine?.

    there are 3 dist that i know of, small cap is prob the correct dist for your jeep, my 1947 willys truck had a very small dist on the L head

    There is also an off-shore repro distributor that uses it's own cap. IIRC it does not interchange with any other distributor...

    Thanks for your help guys ,, I still need to find out what cap I need but, at least I now know there is more than one type used on the flat-heads.

    To be honest Jim, Im just no good with computers, posting pix up on here is way beyond this ol fellas skills,, emailing pixs is about my limit.

    Both caps do look VERY similar, in fact its a job to tell unless they're both side by side.

    I managed to get the Jeep going today by drilling out the old coil lead fitting from the dizzy which had broken off & corroded inside the cap. A kinda temporary field repair until I can find the right replacement.

    I had a similar problem with mine. The replacement cap from Krage looked the same but did not want to fit right and when I did get it snapped on it wouldnt run. I just put the old one back on and threw the new one in the tool box for later.
