    i have a 66 cj5 that i believe has the t-90 3 speed . i have found a t-150 transmission and i was wondering if i swapped them if i would gain anything from doing so. Is the t-150 a better tranny? I dont know much about them so some help would be great. thanks

    What's wrong with the current tranny?

    Wouldn't be a direct swapped, adapter (expense) of some type to be certain, T-150 is fully synchronized but not stronger, t-case would bolt up as the D18/20 share the same pattern. In short, not worth it.

    Do a search for a T-18 swap, or if you just want a fully synchronized transmission, the '70/'71 T-14 would be bolt-in.

    The only thing with the current tranny is that it will pop out of second gear. Its not horrible. I can keep my hand on the shifter to keep it in or it will stay in but the bumps tend to knock it out. Is that normal?

    Yes, normal for a T90 needing a rebuild. :D

    If I am correct, it should just be a syncro prob. If so the syncro kit (2 brass rings, 2 circular springs, 3 formed steel dogs, $14+shipping via HermTheOverdriveGuy and can be done in-frame after removing the TCase (as long as the splined steel sliding collar is ok). (god, I wish I didn't know this info from recent experience)

    T86 is a T90 with different cut gears. If you're really curious we've talked about it before here.

    Homebrew, from my limited experience and extensive reading, general consensus has lead me to believe that when a T90/86 does this, rebuild it. YMMV.

    Well now im not sure i was doing some reading and i have read in one place that the t-86 came stock and in another place that the t-90 came in it. Its a 66 CJ5 with the dauntless v6. sorry just getting confused.

    No argument :) Rebuild is always better than field-fix. All I was saying was, from my research, the popping out thing is a syncro prob (maybe not). I do know, syncros can be fixed, in-frame, on a T90, for $14+shipping, as long as the steel sliding collar(don't know the real name of the piece) is ok ... just did the job, but for a stupid reason, not the popping out of gear prob. :)

    The second gear wears also, so if it's popping out of second I would spend a few more bucks and replace the gear while it's apart. If the gear is shot, it will take the new synchronizers out in fairly short order.

    Now dont you guys bother herm he'mains busy working on my t86, Mine didnot jump out of gear it just when clatter clatter reverse gear worn on the edge and the cluster second gear ground 1/3 off. main shaftneedles broke lying in the bottom. Sure am glad you guy blew herms horn he 's got the stuff and know how!

    Very well could be a synchronizer assembly issue (hub, blocking rings, keys, springs, and sleeve). Also could be the bushing in second gear being worn or the dog teeth on second gear being worn. Could also be excessive play in input and output bearings allowing the shafts to walk back an forth. Time for a rebuild IMHO. Not terribly difficult. i'd pull it to do it though...

    No one answered your question about the T-150.

    Yes, I'd prefer the T-150 over the T-86. It's a Ford passenger car 3-speed, and is both fully synchronized and stronger than the T-90 or T-86.

    There are some issues to be overcome if you want to use the T-150 with a V6 though. The transmission has a Ford bell pattern, so you'd have to adapt it to the V6 bell. The overall length will be different, so it's likely that you'll have to move the crossmember around and change the lengths of your driveshafts. There's only one bull gear (output gear) for the T-150, and it only fits the Dana 20. This special bull gear has a surface for a seal between the trans and TC. I believe you can fit a D18 bull gear and let the trans and TC share oil, but there may be issues with oil level. WE've discussed this before - if you search you should be able to find the thread.

    T-86 isn't the best tranny, T-14 is your next easiest upgrade, very close to t-86 but a little stronger with sincro first gear. If you wana go all out swap in a 4 speed like a ford t-18. The 4 speed is one of the best upgrades you can do to a Jeep in my experiance bit it does cost$ done it on my 57 and 53 both with :v6:. We also swapped out the stock t-86 in our 67 for a t14. The t14 is the stock tranny behind the :v6: from 68?-71 in CJ's. Good luck!
