4x4 Low Popping Out

I have a 75 CJ5, and when I put the case into 4 low, it will pop out when I put some RPMs behind it. I looked unerneath at the linkage, and to me, it looked really sloppy, like bushings and such needed to be changed. The stick travels to the floor, and acts like it wants to go further to put it in 4 low. Im sure this is a linkage problem, what the heck do I look for to get a fresh linkage setup?

Also the problem could be that the transfer case is no longer mounted properly, maybe too low. Or has a body lift been installed causing the problem. Or a combination of the two.

My '80 CJ-5 with a 4" lift kit did the same thing. The floor panel around the shift lever had to be cut out to allow additional travel. The lift kit essentially raises the floor up the shift lever thus restricting its movement.

Well, I would still be interested in replacing the linkage. On the web, i can find kits for wipers, carbs and clutchs, but not for transfercases. Anyone got any leads for an old 75?

Check the regular parts places; Walck's, Turner, etc. IIRC the linkage parts are available. If they aren't listed, call and ask.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

  7. You could always twin stick it since your replacing the linkage.

My 75 did the same thing, the TC shifter linkage was extremely sloppy and would bang on the tool box when in 4WD Low. I took it apart welded the holes re-drilled them and took the slop out of the shifter, Didn't help, I had to disassemble the TC and replace the 2 springs under the shift detent balls. That fixed my D20.

Where do I get a twin stick shifter?

  12. Google Dana 20 twin stick or plug in the same parameters on e bay

I bought mine from some online retailer for 115 but i cant remember which. But it looks like if you order directly from them its cheaper. Wish i knew that earlier! I got the CJ Dana 20 Short. I had to do a little grinding on the pins but other than that it bolted right up. Its also nice that it uses the original pivot.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. With a little mod it turned out slick. The old stuff sure was difficult to remove tho.

    Ahoya!

My linkage on the t-case broke uphill last year shifting from 4h to 4l. Looked at all options and went with a new heavy duty linkage setup w/heim joints provided by George's Jeep Parts. Great guy, slick set up, works great! 601-542-0013

whats the advantage of the twin-shifter? (besides the cool factor, which can never be under-estimated)

Not sure if the Dana 20 is the same, but with twin sticks on a Dana 18 you can have 2 wheel drive low. If you have a locker in the front, this comes in handy. I use 2 low quite a bit. The other thing is, the twin sticks are a lot more user friendly as you don't have to reach as far, especially when going into low range.

Ya, twin sticks let you independantly select axles.

did you have to remove the T-case to install?

It's a heck of a lot easier with the case out.
