New cj5 gas tank issue

First things first. I have read Many, Many threads on this subject and did not find what I was looking for. I have either a 72 or 73 frame and I know that the gas tank mounts directly with one bracket in front and two in the rear corners. My problem is that I purchased a new Poly tank and there are no mount holes on it??? I'm currently searching for an oem skidplate, but not having too much luck. Any good ideas on mounting the poly tank with a newer model skidplate or if I find the oem one?? Thanks fellas.

 

Not sure, but I was thinking about doing the same thing. Maybe some generic tank straps and fabbing a skid out of some 1/4" plate? Good luck, and I hope you come up with something good so I can 'borrow' your idea.

 

I have the tank that fits your install for 71-75CJ. You can see pictures of it as I have a thread in the flat fender section. I do not have the room to get the filler pipe over the frame rail. It is brand new. Possible my application works better for you and yours for mine? Maybe we could work something out for a swap if mine works better for you and yours has the short filler stubs and it will fit between x members on mine?

 

Yeah, the skid plate from 72-75 was optional, though I don't know why anyone would not bought it. The poly tank seller should have known this, and advised you before you bought the tank.

IIRC the later tanks strap down to the skid plate, rather than being suspended before the skid plate is installed. I'd think you could make the later skid plate work. Boyink's page shows a later tank and skid in an early CJ-6, so if it will fit there, it should fit to your frame. http://www.boyink.com/splaat/ssdutch-comments/gas-tank-installing-rear/

 

i thought you are supposed to use straps for poly tanks, but don't quote me on that one.

i have a frame (73 i think) that i am stripping. i pulled it this weekend and brought it home. the gas tank and skid plate are still on it if you are interested in it. i don't want either, maybe i can get this skid to you if you don't want to make one. i'll need to check it out better and be sure it is something that you would even want first. if interested, let me know and i will figure out how to get it to you. don't count on it though, as after more examination, you may not want it...

I bought a new skid with my poly tank. I can look up the part # when I get home but almost certainly from 4wd.com . Its a silver diamond plate looking skid. There were options but I bought the full kit that had tank, skid and straps. The components were available separately though. Stock tank size so stock fuel sending unit and, sadly, stock filler neck. It took me a million years (ok, 1-1/2) to find a stock filler neck from a junkyard. Don't junk yours and if you don't have a servicable one I'd retrofit a different year tank.

 

The bulkhead fitting in the filler hose (from the fill hose to the vent) is also made of unobtainium. Hang on to the stock parts if you have them.

 

When I pulled the tank from my '80 CJ-5 recently it had no straps, only the skidplate holding it in. I am installing a poly tank, do I need to secure it with more than the skid, such as with straps? The old tank was very solidly mounted and did noe move or shift at all. Is this factory or is it missing the tsraps?

 

Thanks for all the advice! I really want to keep the poly tank so I'm thinking I will go for a newer skidplate and strap my poly tank to it somehow and see If I can make it work. Dana, I would love to see what kit you bought! I looked on the website and there is not kit for a 72-75 cj. However, if what you bought worked I'm all about it!! Thanks again!

 

Well, upon further review of the tank I bought "MTS", it does state that for 72-75 cj I need the oem style skid plate and straps. Wish I woulda noticed that first time around!!! Think I'll just get the MTS skid (70-86) and straps (72-86) to make sure everything works together. Thanks!

 

I have a 73 with a fuel cell in the back seat from the previous owner. I want to move it back to the stock location, I do not have any of the original fuel storage system. My question is if I'm willing to relocate the filler to the passenger side can I use al the components from the 76 model year to include tank, straps, skid plate, filler hose, and filler neck? I need all of it, but as mentioned the 72-75 mdl year oems pieces are hard to come by?

The owner of MTS instructed me to purchase galvanized plumbers tape from a hardware store. Use that to affix to factory skid plate, all hoses and necks should clear properly. My tank is on the way, and I plan to use this attack. Or you can always purchase their plate and strap and do it that way, but I'm trying to keep it looking as original as possible.

The '76 comes out on the passenger side rear IIRC, thus the location would be similar to stock. The parts are different though - different filler neck, different hoses, etc. Take a look at Mike Boyink's site re the tank install. His CJ-6 is an earlier model, but the frame dimensions in that area are the same. http://www.boyink.com/splaat/ssdutch-comments/gas-tank-installing-rear/

So yeah, I'm sure you could make it work if you don't care about being original.

 

Or you could purchase a brand new steel tank and it will bolt right on the frame.

BTW, George at George's Jeep Parts has the nipple kits that attach the vent hose to the filler hose. They are expensive, however.
