Roll Bar Roll Call

I've been watching this thread http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66382 about fitting a roll bar into a Commando and I too need to get one into my 71 Commando as well. I was hoping people who have put roll bars into their Commandos could post up some pictures of their installations with a description of what they used or made, that way hopefully we can have one central location here to help others, like me, get ideas of what and how to install one.
I would like to get on into my 71 and be able to put one of those Bestop Tiger Tops on there. Would I still be able to put the hard top back on there with a roll bar in it? My 71 is basically a street cruiser and I don't plan on wheeling it, but I do believe it is an absolute necessity to have a roll bar in there whether it is on the street or off.

Here she is the day I brought her home: http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc87/bigalrock/71 Commando/commando.jpg
The p/o did a soa conversion and it has 31 inch tires. A roll bar is a must!

Let's see pictures of your roll bar installations, I need ideas :)

    Thanks,

    Alan

I am assuming you want to keep the hard top as an option as well? I don't have any pics right now, but in a couple months I will be building one into my buddies '72. With the commando you at least have the option of taking the top off when you build it, otherwise you cut pass through holes in the body that allows the cage to slide down so you can weld the top hoops.

I will be using 1 1/2" .120 DOM with hoops at the A, B and C pillars. I prefer the hoops at A and C instead of the halo with down posts. Why, I have just seen them to be more solid in the rollovers I have seen (YMMV - JMOP - ETC). I also like to use the stretchers like a ladder and not have to make a jungle gym out of things.

Schedule 40, no front hoop. Jeep had a bed headboard in it it when I got it, hopefully this is a step up.

Like to have a front hoop someday, but no "shops" to go to around here, and no one to bend DOM, have to take what you can get.

I had it made to clear the hardtop, then decided the hardtop would never go back on. I have a custom made soft top so when the kids get bigger the hoops are going to have to be taller. I'd like to have one custom made to eliminate some of the soft top hardware, and have the bar hold the soft top up.

This is a Trail Forge kit that I installed in my 1967 Jeepster. The kit was very well fabricated. It probably took 6 hours to install. The cage is not attached to the frame, but only to the body. I fabricated 6"x6"x3/8" plates to install under the floor to bolt the cage to. I had originally planned on building gussets and mounting the cage solidly to the frame, but was informed that unless rock crawling is your game it is safer to have it attached only to the body. The reason gave to me was that in case of a bad accident the body could seperate itself from the frame and risk of injury is reduced. I'm definately not an expert, but......

If anyone is looking for a Jeepster to purchase I'm contimplating putting this one up on the auction block. I have other projects that I need to attend to, but cash is an issue.

Hawkes and grubby you both have real nice looking rigs and thanks for posting pics. This will help me gain ideas of how I want to accomplish this.
It seems to me that I would need to get the soft top installed first before I can figure out placement of the rollbar mounts.

    Keep them pics coming guys.

Has anyone taken a roll bar from a different jeep/vehicle and adapted it to fit?

I went with a family bar out of a TJ since they seem to be available around these parts. The width of the bar fits perfect for the JC I had to cut 6 or so inches off the front downtubes and add about the same to the rear downtubes. I mounts to the floor behind the front seats were the step is to the rear bedfloor and the rears mount just past the wheelwells.
I have a few pics over on the JCCA website.

Here' my old rigs cage we built.

The node over the drivers head has 7 tubes that intersect and is amazingly strong. All 1.75 DOM and worth every penny.

    Here: http://www.jeepstercommandoclub.com/

Nice looking Jeepster you have, looks clean.

    Advice:
    use good materials,
if your not comfortable welding, pay a profesional
Try to use .120 (1/8") wall DOM for the A & B-hoop at least
Use large floor plates with rounded cornes.
(Sharp corners tear thru sheet metal like tissue paper)
Use Grade 5 hardware for bolts. Grade 5 stretches and bends befor it fails, Grade 8 bolts are strong, but they dont like to bend. Bending absorbs energy and this is all about energy absorbtion.

I could go on, but you probably get the idea.
Feel free to ask if you have questions.

    Good luck.

Oh thanks Orionn, brain fart I guess. I joined up there last year.

I picked up a roll bar recently and was holding off posting about it until I had some photos of the install. So hopefully soon I'll be adding mine to this fine list above!!

I ran a smitty built rollbar. 3 piece design and it fits under the hardtop. Bolts to body. Comes powerdercoated black. Not as good as a full cage but better than nothing. Looks proportional too.

Do you have a picture of the Smitty Built you could post up?

Never mind, I found some :)

Who was making the reproduction roll bar that had the lower back side hoops? any know?
