I would like for someone to tell me what the windshield tie down strap for 76-86 cj's looked like, how long ,wide ect. I am going to atemp to make my own.
If you have pics that would be great.
    Thanks,

I orderd one like this and I was very disipointed. It was just a piece of cheap metal that is very thin and piece of fabric. It looks really nice in the picture. I don't think this one is like the OEM.

You really don't need it, there is really no way the windshield will flop up while driving. Been to 75mph with no strap and there was no signs of it lifting.

Beg to differ - Little guy in this picture was being towed to the 2005 Fall Willys Reunion. The strap broke - angle of the windshield tells the rest. Really felt bad for the guy.

Mine has started to lift on the road if there was any slack in the strap at all. And that was at 45mph or so.

I have the same windshield..Mine is a 73 as well.

Add to the fact the older cj5 windshields could actually come off the hinges and well.........that could get really nasty.

    Why take the chance?

Mine was just a web strap/belt about 12 inches long and 1 inch wide, with a metal snap on it - a buckle-type web strap would work. Probably an army surplus store would have something very close. The replacement windshield frames don't have holes for the 2-screw bracket the strap slips through (not mine anyway).

Check your local Harley dealer. Short straps like these are used in the shipment of new bikes, and most dealers discard them after the bike is delivered.
You can probably pick up a few for no cost. And they say Harley Davidson on them :D

I use some nylon webbing, looped through footmans loops, tied into a square knot. Never had a problem with it coming up. That includes 16+ hours at 75 to 80 MPH on a trailer.

ROFL... at 75mph in a cj the last thing I would be worried about is the windshield... staying alive would be my first concern :p

I just saw some dog collers at walmart that look like they would do a excellent job of holding the windshield down. I will be getting one of those to replace my old rotted one.
