I was looking for some early CJ-5 for some fenders for my M38A1, but they were cut up. The owner of the yard said "did you look at the Jeepster?" He has a fiberglass Jeepster tub (nice dash, no interior, but also not cut up) with VERY nice steel fenders, hood & grille. I could use the fenders, but.... Can you guys educate me on the 'glass Jeepster body - good/bad/esirable, etc.

    Thanks,

I think you better get some pictures of that, it could possibly be the only one in existence.

I'll probably go buy this thing because the price is right. I didn't know anything about Jeepsters (obviously I know what they are, just didn't follow them in detail). I'll take pics when I get it home.

I guess I should've grabbed pics of the one here in town then...

Somebody made 'glass Jeepster tubs back in the day. The Jeep dealership I worked for (Brian Chuchua) sold them, and their fleet of race cars (3 or 4, maybe more) were all 'glass body Jeepsters with tilt front ends. These bodies were not made on site, but sourced from a factory that made them and CJ-5 bodies.

We've discussed 'glass v. steel before ... I prefer steel, but the 'glass bodies have their fans. Nothing really wrong with the 'glass body, other than it's clearly fiberglass when examined close up. To some, that's an advantage because it won't rust.

One was just sold up 2 streets from me. Complete aftermarket kit built on some earlier Chevy frame, with 350 and Chevy 4x4 axles. Looked good, was an old build...late 70's or early 80's. Hood, fenders, tub-all glass. Had a neat soft top on it. Looked more like the old style 2wd Jeepster. I didn't think it would sell, or I would have got pics of it...

I finalized the deal on the jeepster. - I'll pick it up on Sat & take pics then. The tub, hood & grille will be for sale shortly. (I need the fenders)

Sandhill Mike requested the tub first (he's my neighbor and a bud) - so he'll get it. I'll still take some pics & post here.

    Thanks for the replies.

"Fiberglass" Tub update - I went to pick up the parts. The fenders & Grille are just as I saw. VERY nice condition. The yard guy brings over a HUGE front end loader to move some other cars to get at the Jeepster. I tgell him we can lift the Jeepster tub by hand (carefully) 'cause its fiberglass. He says no, its a sandwich - of rusted steel, a layer of bondo and a top dressing of Rhino-liner... Ad he drags it out, I can see it all clearly its NOT what I was told. I had to get the thing complete to get the parts I wanted. I knew Sandhill Mike would be disappointed with it, but CLEARLY, not the 'glass tub I told him about. It was clearly a "parts" jeepster, and I have enough projects than to pull little parts off and sell piecemeal. I also didn;t want another tote marked "Jeepster" parts that I would trip over in the shed.

I looked a the low hanging fruit on the body (gauge/switch plates/taillights, etc.) and all chrome is pitted. I DID pull off the dataplate and the glovebox door. The Grille is nice and pretty straight, but needs one turn signal cover.

I went right by another scrapyard on the way home, so Itook the tub there and got a little of my money back. This way SWMBO doesn;t have another thing to complain about.

The fibreglass tub remains a myth!

They existed ... but the ones I remember did not have any door openings. You entered the race cars NASCAR-style.
